Newspaper photo of Ida O'Brien Soderholm
Ida O'Brien Soderholm was the niece of George W. Hinton. This photo was printed in the LAKE CITY TIMES, reprinted from the Denver Post, Thursday, April 15, 1909, page 2. LAKE CITY HAS ONLY WOMAN ALDERMAN IN THE UNITED STATES. Under the above heading, accompanied by a picture of herself, the DENVER POST of April 9 has the following to say about our woman alderman: "Mrs. E. W. Soderholm of Lake City is the only 'woman alderman' in the United States. She was elected a member of the board of aldermen at last Tuesday's election, receiving more votes than any one on the ticket except John F. Maurer, the nominee for mayor. She is a self-made woman in every sense of the term. She has been in the mercantile business in this city twelve years and the large trade she enjoys is proof of her popularity and business ability. Her maiden name was the unmistakably Irish one of O'Brien. She lived seven years in Clear Creek county, part of the time at Georgetown and attended school at Lawson. The people of Lake City, who have known her all these years, do not consider the election of a woman of Mrs. Soderholm's well known ability and independence of thought and action an experiment in any sense of the word, with all her independence and push, she is in every way a very womanly woman, an optimist whose ready sympathy and advice have served as the needed tonic to many a disheartened being. Combined with these excellent qualities is the natural wit of the Irish race from which she comes."
