The Mystery of Paul Albert Gottlieb Hinze is beginning to unravel. We know that Paul was born in Germany on May 13, 1865 and he immigrated to the United Stated on June 23, 1881.He left Germany from the Port of Bremen and arrived at the Port of Baltimore aboard the German Steamship Herman. The 1885 Minnesota State Census shows Paul living in Brownsdale, Mower County, Minnesota. We know the story of his marriage to Elizabeth Weghorn on December 14, 1885.From the “Mower County Transcript” we can determine that Paul and his family moved to the Village of Zumbrota, Goodhue County in May of 1887.This is the same month George was born.Paul made known his intent to become a Citizen of the United States on March 10, 1888 at Red Wing, Goodhue County. After the Zumbrota flood Paul moved his family to St. Paul, Ramsey County.Paul took the oath of allegiance, completing the second step in the citizenship process, on December 30, 1897.Our last documented location of Paul is in the 1907 City Directory showing Paul and his family living at 347 University Ave. St. Paul, Minnesota and having a shoe shop at 380 University. It is believed that he left his wife in 1908 as that city directory states that Paul moved to Seattle, Washington. After 40 years of research Paul is found listed in the 1920 Census. In January of 1920 Paul A. Hinze was 54 years old and living in Alameda County, Berkeley Township, California with his new wife, May Frances, age 35, and their daughter, Loretta, whose age was 2 years, 11 months. They were living at 1624 Josephine Street. This is still a valid address today however, it is unknown what property is now located there. The Census shows that at this time Paul was running his own shoemaker shop.It also shows his year of Immigration as 1851 which should probably read 1881.The Census also states that Paul became a Naturalized Citizen in 1896. There is not much information on his wife May Frances, except that she was born in Illinois, and both her parents were born in Missouri. Finally, the 1920 Census shows that their daughter Loretta A. was born in California. Paul died on April 19, 1920, just 4 months after the census was taken. He had been a resident of California for 4 1/2 years.Cause of death was listed as Chronic Interstitial Nephritis and Arterio Sclerosis. He was buried on April 21, 1920 at the Sunset View Cemetery. His grave is unmarked. | The Richard W.
