FACTS CONCERNING
THE COHEE FAMILY COLLATED BY
ANDREW COHEE, LEBANON, INDIANA APRIL, 1895.

BENJAMIN AND REBECCA COHEE, with their eight children-- seven sons and one daughter--emigrated from Butler County, Ohio, to Clinton County, Indiana, and settled four miles northwest of Frankfort, September 24, 1830. Afterwards, there were three daughters born into the family.
While moving across the country northwest of Indianapolis, then known as the wilderness, the children cried for water but none could be found, until when driving along a new road through a piece of low-land, water was discovered in tracks in the road. The good mother had the teams to stop and taking a tin cup, she dipped water from the tracks and gave to the children.
The outfit for the moving party consisted of 1 two horse team (one horse being hired, and afterwards returned to Ohio by Cousin George Cohee), 1 team of heavy oxen, 1 two-year old black filly, 2 milk cows and heifer, 16 head of sheep, 2 large sows with their shoats, 2 dogs, a new rifle for killing wild game, a new four-foot dinner horn, a pair of hand wool-cards, a spinning wheel and a good supply of axes and other implements with which the father and sons cleared off about one-half of the heavy forest from the 240 acres of land the father had purchased of the government for a home. The plows they brought with them had wooden mould boards and the harvesting implements were hand sickles, mowing scythes and wooden pitch-forks. The nearest mill at which they could get grinding done was south of LaFayette, Indiana.
There are only three of that emigrant family who survive at the time of this writing, vis., ANDREW, JAMES L, AND HEZEKIAH. These three brothers and a number of their kindred and friends, observed the sixty-fourth anniversary of their settling in Clinton County, at the home of Andrew Cohee, four miles north of Lebanon, on September 24, 1894.[Broderbund Family Archive #304, Ed. 1, Census Records, Indiana, 1860, Date of Import: Sep 9, 1998, Internal Ref. #1.304.1.4331.10]
