117. Personal Knowledge, Portions of the information on the Chapman line were compiled by Carole Fawler, who resided in St. Albans, WV in July 1984, at the request of Uncle Gerald Chapman. In 2007 Carole resides in Jacksonville, FL, and is still involved in ancestery work.I have been in contact with her as we are relatives. Granddad was one of two timber barons in Richwood, the other being granddad Leonard Hinkle. When I was 4 or 5 years old, Uncle Gideon Champan took me on a wood fired train up the South Fork of Cherry River, dropping us off at the mouth of Big Rocky Creek and we walked several miles up a railroad spur to granddad's camp. I remember Gid telling me the camp was around the bend and I asked him to give me my suitcase to carry. The camp house with kitchen sit on the side of a hill. Grandad had a garden iln the back. He had several me cutting timber for him.Grandma cooked for everyone. We lived with Granddad on upper Spruce Street, Milltown, Richwood, WV before and when I started to school. I can remember hearing bullits whizzing down main street from the CIO people on the mountain side trying to get the Lumberjacks working at the Big Mill to join the union - never happened.. My dad was working the the Big Mill at the time and he said they took their guns to work and just got behind a stack of lumber when the bullets started flying. Charlie Badgett, owner, had a .50 caliber machine gun mounted lin his office to be used if anyone at the mill got hurt. I used to sit on granddad's lap and listen to the news on the radio. He was a republican and when he would ask me what I was, I replied " a puggin". Granddad had more than a few sour works for FDR. I was living at Granddad on Spruce Street when they started building theHighwayup the North Fork of Cherry River and over the mountain to Millpoint, route 29. During the war they build a prison camp beside this road on Kinnison Mountain for use to confine non combatants, mostly Jehovah Witnesses.

Blocked out, too close to turn around so went ahead to Hamils drive, nosed in and started to back around - CM (Charolette Miller) protested that I should have back down the road (over 200') to turn around on Southern Av. Then she was excited about the right front wheel dropping in the ditch. Continued to protest about my driving as I completed backing around and then going forward toward SouthernAve. I asked to stop nagging, and then in a strong voice to shut up; stopped the car half way to Southern Ave - took my keys out, got out of the car, closed the door, and walked back to the house. This nagging on her part about my driving is irritating and provocative. As she refuses to sleep in the same bed and preferred the top bunk (Sammy sleeping below). What change in her or me has occurred. Has her "change of life" made a difference in her attitude toward me? What is the answer? WRM.
