Notes for WILLIAM PETER BECKMAN: During the Civil War, a company of the German artillery of Charleston under Capt Wagner was stationed here. One of the soldiers, W.P. Beckman, returned to McClellanville in 1867 and started amercantile business. This was the first store in the parish. He owned the Blackwood Plantation located between the North and South Santee Rivers. In 1892, he sold it to his son L.A. Beckman and C.C. Bunch. He was a ruling elder in the New Wappetaw Presbyterian Church. |
