Includes NotesNotes for Benedict Harrison Riney:
Harry, as he was called, was a very quiet man. He was so easy going. He wound take the grandkids to the water well to take water back home. It was about a mile across the field, but the grandkids got to ride in his truck. He had every day overalls as well as Sunday-go-to-meeting ones. They were always crisp and clean. He would wear his good ones to Merkel on Saturdays.

Merkel was once known as a city with many cotton gins, iin fact Granddad was a cotton farmer. Nelma remembers picking cotton as part of the life on the farm.

Benedict Harrison Riney was born on the family ranch in Mulberry Canyon. The children attended school at the "Riney School House." B.J. and a coule of other canyon familes donated land and labor to build a school for the education of their children. A graduation program at the school, April 1897, shows Harry as the Valedictorian. In 1906 when B. J. became ill, he and Eliza sold the ranch to four (Joe, Jessie, Roy and Harry) Riney boys. They were unable to "make a go of it" and ultimately sold it back to their mother.

Harry married Fannie Bell Blair in 1911. They purchased a farm at Nubia where they lived most of their lives. In addition to farming and ranching, Harry also operated a blacksmith shop in Nubia.

In the early days when Harry and Fannie lived at Nubia, it was a thriving community with a school and a number of stores. Harry's blacksmith shop was located beside the Nubia store and when the farmers needed to have work done at the shop, the kids were excited because that meant they could have candy and cold drinks. Visitors to their home enjoyed Fannie playing hymns on her tall, beautiful Victorian pump organ. Harry and Fannie were members of the Pioneer Methodist Church in Mulberry Canyon.

Both Harry and Fannie lived their last two years in the Merkel Nursing Home. They died only about a month apart.
