Marriage Notes for ÞORFINNUR ÞÓRÐARSON and GUÐRÍÐUR ÞORBJARNARDÓTTIR:
Þorfinn "karlsefni" Þórðarson, an Icelandic merchant, was considered a man of stature comparable to Leif Erikson. He attempted the first settlement in Vinland.
He came to Greenland from Norway and spent the winter at Brattahlid, Leif Erikson. During this time he learned about the voyage to Vinland and he started planning his own voyage there. He collected livestock of various kinds with the intention of making a permanent home in Vinland. He encouraged 60 men and 5 women to join him to this new land.
This new settlement seemed to prosper. "They made use of all the natural resources of the country that were available, grapes and game of all kinds and other produce."1 They established a trading relationship with the natives of North America. This ended when a native was killed by a member of Þorfinn's party. This probably resulted in a continuing battle causing Þorfinn to decide to abandon Vinland and return to Greenland.
They lived in this new land for about three years and Þorfinn's wife gave birth to a son, the first European child to be born in North America, whom was named Snorri.
Þorfinn returned to Greenland with a cargo of furs, lumber and other commodities. Þorfinn and Guðríður then went to Iceland and settled in Skagafjördur where their descendants prospered.
