| RESEARCHING the following surnames: HOEFS, BREITAG, ZEGERS, VAN RENS, RENQUIN, & GILLIS. The Zegers, Van Rens, Renquin, and Gillis families settled mainly in the Great Lakes region, predominately Wisconsin & Illinois, in the latter half of the 1800's, from the Netherlands and Belgium. The Hoefs and Breitag's immigrated from Germany in the latter half of the 1800's. Little is known about what part of Germany they came from, etc. The Breitag's immigrated in the 1880's. First place of residence was Connecticut. By the end of the 1880's they had settled in South Dakota, in the Leola area. The patriarch of the family was named Gottlieb Breitag. Several children, Karl, Frederick, Wilhelmina, Augusta, and Maria also immigrated and with the exception of Augusta settled in the Leola area. Augusta married Ernest Hall in Meriden, New Haven Co., Connecticut. After the death of Ernest in 1887, Augusta joined her family in Leola, SD. Heinrich Hoefs (Henry) immigrated to the U. S. in 1870. Little is known of his whereabouts or activities until 1886, where he surfaced in Leola, SD, and purchased property. In 1889, he married Augusta Breitag. In 1891, Heinrich and Augusta moved west and settled in Sherwood, Washington Co., Oregon. Any information on Henry or Heinrich Hoefs during the period of 1870 to 1886 would be greatly appreciated. He appears to be the brother of Karl Hoefs who immigrated earlier and settled in the Park Rapids, Minnesota area. No information has been found which links Henry with the Minnesota area. However, my father, Herbert Frederick Wilhelm Hoefs, did mention relatives in the Minnesota area. Neither my side of the family, nor apparently the descendants of Karl Hoefs, have information on ancestors before the two brothers, or exactly where in Germany they were from (Both Prussia and Pommerania have been mentioned). There is also supposed to have been a third brother, John who immigrated. We have absolutely no information on this brother or his descendants. |
