C, 12th Cvlry Btl, Confederacy. He served for about one year, deserted and joined the US Army on 22 Dec 1863 at Tazewell, Claiborne Co.,Tn.. His description was aged 23 years, gray eyes, dark hair, light complexion 5 ft, 10 in tall. He was assigned to Co. G, 12 th Reg of the Ten. Cavalry; reported absent without leave on 15 Feb 1864 at Charlotte, Tn.; later sent to Co. R, 12th Tn. Cvlry, where he is reported as deserter on 21 Jun 1864 at Tullahoma, Tn.. He returned on 22 Sep 1864 and was transferred to Co. A. Reg Tn Cvlry on 1 Apr 1864; met the terms set forth to be pardoned for desertion. He was mustered out of service at Ft. Leavenworth, Ks on 7 Oct 1865. Jacob Warner Rosenbalm, Sr. died in Washington twp., Independence, Ar. on 10 Mar 1887. James and Ellah Romines state in their affidavit included in the pension claim that they were present at the death of Jacob on the Swain Place, Washington twp., Independence Co., Ar. Jacob was making cross ties when he took sick with pneumonia and died. He was buried at the "Cambolite Church grave yard, neart the James Hedstrems place". On 7 Feb 1891, Nancy E. Rosenbalm, widow of Jacob filed for his pension ; several years passed with various documents being sent to Wash. DC to confirm the births of the children, the marr. of Jacob and Nancy, etc. Finally the pension was denied. The last entry was dated 29 Jan 1906 when J.J. Bryan wrote to Washington DC to see if the pension could be drawn by children under 16 yrs of age. He states that Nancy has died and one child is a "hopeless Lunatic". He was apparently referring to Harriett whom the cousins and my aunts told me was mentally handicapped. Nancy is buried in Canaan Cem, south of Marshall near the graves of her sons, John Robert and David and some of her brothers. 1875 Census Cherry Twp., Montgomery County, Kansas; Roll #0570213, taken from agriculture tax list.
