Notes

Notes for Hans Bernhard ROSENBAUM:
EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY PALATINE EMIGRATION - Walter A. Knittle, 1937.
From the booklet on the early Palatines is found the name, Bernard Rosenbaum, included in the New York lists for subsistence given either in New York City or the Hudson River settlements from the landing of the immigrants in 1710 to September, 1712. In 1710, Bernard is listed as having a wife, Catharine, and 3 children. If the children were over ten years of age, they were counted as adults. In 1710 there were 4 adults and 1 child. In 1712, there were 3 adults and 1 child listed. Bernard is also included on Governor Hunter's Ration lists from June 1710 to September 1714. By 1714, he and his wife, Maria Catherina are in the Swatera Region of Pennsylvania.

The earliest record of the name, ROSENBAUM, that has been found is located in the above booklet. The word "Palatine" was first used to refer to Germans immigrating from the part of Germany called the "Palatinate." Later, Germans from other parts of Germany were also called "Palatines." This list was compiled by a man named Simmendinger who had been in the German settlements along the Hudson River in the early 1700s and had returned to Germany. The list of names included the heads of families who were to receive subsistence allowances from Governor Hunter of New York.

In the early 1700s, the English promised land and religious freedom to many people living in what is now Germany, on order to have them help colonize large areas of land which included present day Pennsylvania. The Germans had many difficulties to overcome before finally settling in their new homes. They were hurriedly brought from Germany to London and then placed in camps outside the city where they had to wait until enough ships were available to take them to the Colonies. After their arrival in America, in the summer of 1710, they were again placed in camps along the Hudson River, probably near New York City. After surviving a severe winter and waiting for the English to give them land, some of them started looking for their own farm land on which to settle.

Conrad Weiser led a group of men into the Tulpehocken area of Pennsylvania which included parts of present day Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, and Dauphin counties. They settled on the Swatara Creek about 20 miles from its mouth where it joins the Susquehanna River. The present town of Middletown, Pennsylvania, a few miles southeast of Harrisburg, is where the mouth of the Swatara Creek is located. The whole area along the creek which included the present towns of Lebanon, Anneville, Jonestown and Fredericksburg, was known as the Swatara Region. It is believed that Bernard took his family, as so may other had done, after 1714 to the Swatara Region of Pennsylvania and settled there and that at least one or more of is children settled in that area also.

NOTE: This shows that the children were not born in Pennsylvania as some people have noted in previous data input into FHC Ancestral File. Have contact with George Rosenbalm of WA & Clifford Canfield of Hemet, CA. They are going to share info on original immigrant with me (Summer 1997).

NOTE from Donna Wood in WA:
Our Immigrant ancestor, Bernard Rosenbaum and His wife Maria Catharina Winth Beltzer were from the small village of Orien (1) in the Taunus Mountains just slightly northwest of Wiesbaden, West Germany. Wiesbaden is a beautiful city located just a little southwest of Frankfurt and almost on the Rhine River. When I visited Orien in the spring of 1986 , I found a very small village in a hilly farming area of the Taunus. There were few buildings in the village and none seemed to date from the year 1700. However, undoubtedly some of the foundations and even some parts of the remodeled homes may have been that old.
