4. HANNAH3 BENNETT (ISAAC2, ?1)11 was born Abt. 1785 in Pennsylvania, and died January 26, 1859 in Scarborough township, York county, Ontario, Canada. She married (1) ? BARTON Abt. 1801 in Probably Pennsylvania. He died Bef. June 1809. She married (2) JONATHAN ASHBRIDGE June 21, 1809 in Scarborough twp., York Co., Ontario, son of JONATHAN ASHBRIDGE and SARAH JAMES. He was born 1773 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and died Unknown.

Notes for H
ANNAH BENNETT:
At age 16, Hannah became involved with John Black of Stoney Creek township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. In 1799, Hannah became pregnant with John Black's child. A record of this is filed at the Somerset Courthouse, John Black being charged with Fornication. John was fined $300, which his father, James Black paid. Hannah was fined $200, which her father, Isaac paid. There is the possibility that Hannah's first child, Delilah Barton, is actually the illegitmate daughter of John Black and Hannah, however this has not been proven. Hannah married a Mr. Barton somewhere between 1800 and 1804. Hannah and Mr. Barton had two more daughters, Julia Ann and Phoebe. No information has been found for Mr. Barton, where he came from, his age, etc... He died by the year 1808.
According to the Ashbridge Book, Hannah's brother Jacob brought her and the children to York County, Ontario, Canada after the death of her 1st husband. She remarried Jonathan Ashbridge in Toronto, June 1809. Hannah & Johnathan had 7 children together. Hannah made a trip back to Pennsylvania bringing along her son Isaac who was a child at the time. According to her granddaughter, Mrs. Bennett Draper, "she was a fine looking woman, tall, heavy set, fair, with blue eyes and light hair."

Notes for
? BARTON:
March 30, 2003. In reviewing the 1800 census extract for Bedford County, Pennsylvania, indications lead to the possibility that "Mr. Barton" was Adam Barton who lived in Quemahoning township. He is not listed in any census for 1810 which would fit with him dying about 1808. More information and research is needed to prove this theory.

Notes for J
ONATHAN ASHBRIDGE:
Excerpt from the will of Jonathan Ashbridge;

" ...Also to my beloved wife Hannah Ashbridge, 50 pounds a year to be paid quarterly in advance in equal shares by my three sons, Isaac, Jonathan and Jesse. Also the use of my light waggon and horse at any time she may require same with the west half of my dwelling house with the whole of the garden in front and rear and two cows for her own use. And it is my wish that my daughters Rebeca and Amy shall remain in my dwelling house and have their support the same as they had in my lifetime as long as they remain single and my horses, cattle and sheep to remain during the lifetime of my wife for the benefit of the farm and family. And the fruit in the orchard to be divided among my children..."

It is apparent in reading Jonathan Ashbridge's will that he was a loving father and husband and treated his step-daughter's (Barton's children) as his own.

BENNETT

The Bennett family, with which we are interested, at the time consisted of:
Jesse, married Catherine Covert, was a mill-wright and lost his life in a mill in Vaughan Twp. (northern Toronto)
John, died in Vaughan.
Jacob.
Jinny (Regina)
Hannah, married...Barton and 2d Jonathan Ashbridge.
Aquila, married Susannah Covert, sister to Catherine.
The (Bennett) grandfather of those mentioned above, emigrated with his family to Virginia, taking up an "immense tract of land" there. From Virginia, they moved to Pennsylvania, thought to be to some part near the Susquehanna River, as they often spoke of it.
Becoming probably dissatisfied, the grandfather returned to England, the family remaining in America until during some Indian war or raid the father, whose name is thought to be Isaac Bennett, was killed and scalped, after which the mother and children moved to Canada.
Mrs. Bennett did not like her new home in Canada, and went back to Pennsylvania with her daughter Jinny (whose real name is believed to be Regina) and son Jacob,: who afterwards moved to Iowa, where he had a large property. Some years afterward he again visited Canada "bringing with him his sister Hannah (Barton), then widow.
For the information given above relating to the family of Hannah Bennett, I am indebted to Miss Edith Draper, of Belhaven, York Co., Ont., whose mother Mrs. (Bennett) Draper, then in her 89th year, gave her the same from her own clearly defined personal recollections. Extending these to her memory of my grandfather and grandmother she notes:
"Amy resembled her father (Jonathan Ashbridge) most of all; but Jesse also resembled him. Isaac resembled his mother most, but Rebecca and Dehlia (Barton) also resembled her. The children were all fair and nearly all had light hair. Their mother (Hannah) was a very fine looking woman, tall, heavy set, fair with blue eyes and light hair. The father (Jonathan) was a plain man, tall and fair.
Mrs. Draper was a visitor in her younger days at the old Ashbridge home on the Kingston Rd. She is a daughter of Aquila and Susanna (Covert) Bennett, who were married before coming to Canada.
Note: The second visit of Jacob and Hannah to Canada mentioned above would probably be about 1806-08. From Robertson's Landmarks, vol.3, p.415, we have: *24 Sept. 1818. Married by special license James McClure and Dehlia Barton. Witnesses John Henson & Samuel Mills. (St. James Anglican records)

More from the Ashbridge Book:
"His early years were spent on the Susquehanna River, and his father dying when he was about the age of ten years, he was, together with his sister Sarah put under the guardianship of his elder brother John. Coming to Canada from Pennsylvania in 1793, which fact is specially stated upon his gravestone...here he made his home for 52 years, living with his mother until 1801 and married in 1809 to Hannah Bennett Barton a widow with three children by her first husband"
