Notes for RICHARD GODFREY:
At age 21, Richard is first found in a 1652 deed in which the Leonard family mention that their property was bounded by the land of Richard Godfrey. The property was near the Old Forge, in Taunton, MA. Richard lived close to the Iron Works in the section known as "Squawbetty", and John Turner Jr. was a Co-owner of the Iron Works. It is theorized that Richard was employed there and met his future wife Jane.
Richar it appears, broke a few of the strict Puritan laws of his day. On 5 March, 1672, "Richard Godfrey, of Taunton, being presented for speaking opprobriously of some place in the town of Taunton, was sentenced by the court to sit in the stocks at Taunton on a training day, so as it exceed not two hours."
Fourteen years later on 6 July 1686, Richard was fined five pounds into the hand of William Wetherell.
From the will of "Richard Godfree" is states that he gave his son Robert Godfree, five pounds; daughter Jane, five pounds; daughter Alice, five pounds and daughter Susanna, five pounds. His sons Richard Jr. and John were given the remainder of the estate and named executors. He gave his wife Mary, 20 bushels of corn, 1 hog and 1 good cow. (Lucky Girl!!)
