2. ROBERT² GODFREY (RICHARD¹) was born Abt. 1661 in Taunton, MA, and died Bet. 25 April 1726 - 08 February 1727/28 in North Kingston, RI. He married HANNAH HACKETT 14 January 1683/84 in Taunton, MA. She was born Bet. 25 January 164/65 - 1666 in Taunton, MA.

Notes for ROBERT GODFREY:
As a young man, Robert was once arraigned before Reverend Danforth who was acting as Justice of the Peace. The charge was "Offering to kiss a young lady for whom he conceived a fondness for" The executioner of the law was directed to inflict on Robert a number of lashes at the whipping post. After being whipped, Robert was informed that the execution of the sentence be recorded at his expense.
On 4 July, 1679, aged 18, Robert was again sentenced to be whipped at the post, this time for stealing a bar of Iron, running away from his master, and other misdemeanors. On 6 July 1686, aged 27, Robert and his wife Hannah were convicted in court for fornication before marriage. The couple pleaded to the court that at the time they were "under contract" (engaged) but they were fined five pounds and court fees. Times certainly have changed in the past 300 years!
On 22 March 1725-26, Robert and Hannah sold their homestead to Shadrach Wilborne. It appears that Robert may have been ill at the time, as he appointed his wife to act on his behalf to purchase land in North Kingston, RI. 25 April, 1726, Hannah bought 49 acres of land from Daniel Scranton. It is suspected that they moved to Rhode Island from Taunton, MA to be near their son John in their golden years, and perhaps due to Robert's illness?
