Notes for R
ICHARD STORMS:
Richard & family traveled to Ohio from New York in a Lumber Wagon. The 1840 Ohio census, shows Richard,& Louisa between 30 & 40 years old; with 2 male children under 5, 1 male child between 5 & 10 years of age and one female child between 5 & 10 years of age. Living close by are 2 other Storms men whom I believe are his brothers, but as of yet have not yet verified, David & Daniel Storms, also his sister, Sabrina & brother-in-law James Smith.
Richard & family moved between the 1840 and 1847 from Ohio to Michigan. Richard is first found on a tax-payers list in Livingston county.
Sometime afterwards he moved his family to Litchfield township, Hillsdale county, Michigan where they lived for the next 30 years.
In 1850, wife, Louisa, is not listed with Richard. Family stories handed down from Hannible & Hamilton Storms tell that their mother, Louisa "went crazy", so their father, Richard, took another wife.
It isn't clear what happened to Louisa after the 1840 Ohio census. No record of her death has been found yet, nor do we know if Louisa even came to Michigan with Richard and children.
In the 1850 census, Richard is living with his children: John, age 17; Eliza Ann, age 16; Charles, age 13 and Hamilton, age 7. Son Hannible for some reason lived with his Aunt Sabrina & Uncle James Smith in Bridgeton township, Newaygo county, Michigan. All the children, with the exception of John, are attending school. Richard and son John are listed as Farmers.
His brother (?) David, along with his family are living 2 farms down from Richard.
Richard married Anna Vroman in 1850, and started a family. Between wives Louisa & Anna, Richard fathered 11 children, possibly more!
In 1870 Hamilton was also moved to Bridgeton township to live with his Aunt Sabrina.

In 1870 Richard's new family had grown to 6 children: Mary, age 14; George, age 13; Frank, age 12; Delbert, age 10; Ella, age 8 and Daniel, age 4. All the children are listed as being in school.

In 1880, Richard is still farming at the age of 75, his wife Anna, keeping house. Their children, Daniel, Ella, Mary, Adelbert and George are all living at home, along with a granddaughter, Olive M. Ferrell. Brother (?) Daniel & his wife, Lucy, are living in the same town.

Notes for S
ABRINA STORMS:
Sabrina's death certificate, in Newaygo County, recorded her as being born 9 May, 1811 and died 11 July, 1887. However deaths were only filed once a year, so the clerk's office may not be accurate. By the same token her gravestone may not be accurate either. In this case I am using the information obtained from the tombstone as her date of birth and death, until further information becomes available.

AMES SMITH:
James Smith met and married Sabrina Storms in New York about 1836. It was there that their 1st daughter Martha Ann was born. Shortly after they moved to Madison township, Sandusky County, Ohio. There they had three more daughter's, Ellen Jane, Eliza and Adelia M. In 1854 they moved to Bridgeton township, Newaygo County, Michigan where they made their home.
In 1860 the value of their real estate was $700 and their personal property was $300. Also in 1860 their daughter Adelia (age 14) is recorded as attending school. Furthermore, they had their nephew, Hannible Storms living with them, along with 10 year old Napoleon Jennings, who was born in Ohio. It is not clear why Napoleon was with them, perhaps orphaned?
In 1884 they had a boarder, Thomas Smith, born 1866 in Michigan, who was deaf. His father was born in New York, his mother in Canada. He is no doubt somehow related to this family.
Sabrina lived with here daughter, Eliza and son-in-law Edgar Whitman for a time between 1870 & 1887, after the death of her husband. James died sometime before 1870, while only in his early fifties.

There is an old Indian cemetery on the Storms homestead (Hamilton Storms s/o Richard, section 21, on the north side of the river.) Stories were told by Charles and Sabrina, along with other relatives who lived along the river at the time, of Indian burial ceremonies. They could remember the Indian's howling cries along with the Indians bringing their dead down river to the burial grounds by canoe.

Since the Storms and the Smiths lived on opposite sides of the river they would walk along the banks and yell or whistle until someone from the opposite side of the river heard them and brought the boats over to get them.
