Notes for C
HARLES GRAVES:
Charles is first found in 1820 living in New York. He applied for Naturalization in 1840, it is not know why he waited until 1840 to declare his intent to become a citizen of the United States.
He was married twice, with his first wife, Elizabeth 'Betsey', he had 5 children. After Elizabeth's death he remarried Clarissa and fathered 8 more children. While living in Clinton County, New York, he served in the War of 1812 and fought at the Battle of Plattsburgh. Charles, Clarissa and the children of their marriage moved to Wisconsin after 1841. He is found in Pewaukee township., Waukesha County.,Wisconsin in 1855 with 4 males and 5 females living in his home. Although only the Head of the household is listed in the 1855 census, the 3 males, other than Charles, are more than likely his sons, Louis, George and Edward. The 5 females, would have been Charles' wife, Clarissa, and 4 daughters, Adeline, Caroline, Clarissa and Elizabeth.
He moved his family to Muskegon Co.,MI in 1857 on a sailing vessel coming across Lake Michigan. His name is listed as one of the early settlers to the area.
In the year 1860, Charles at age 72 was still working, his occupation on the census is "Day Laborer". His Real Estate value was $350, his personal property value, $100. Their children, George, age 23; Adeline, age 18; Caroline, age 18; Clarissa, age 16; and Elizabeth, age 14, are still living with them. Daughters, Adeline and Caroline are twins.
By 1870 Charles had finally retired. His Real Estate value increased to $2,500 and his personal property value to $200. Their children, Edward, age 44; and Caroline, age 28; are living with them, also living with Charles & Clarissa are their grandson's, Mortimer and Lester.
After 40 plus years of marriage, Charles wife Clarissa passed away. Charles probably went to live with one of his children after his wife's death, he is not found in any of the city directories after 1873. He died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Alexander (Caroline) Marcoux.

" Another Veteran of 1812 Gone"
The death of Charles Graves, which took place in this city last Monday at the residence of Alexander Marcoux, takes away another of the veterans of 1812. Mr. Graves was born Sept. 13, 1787, and was one of the soldiers of the War of 1812 and was engaged in the battle of Plattsburg. He has been a resident of this city for about 25 years, and at the time of his death was 91 years, 2 months and 26 days old. He was always a staunch Republican and was highly esteemed in this county as an upright citizen. The funeral took place from St. Mary's Catholic Church on Wednesday, the services being conducted by Father VanPammel.

Ila Reynolds, who raised Charles' great-grandson, Jacques Graves Godfrey, always told Jacques and his children that there was "Blue Blood" in the Graves line. Other researcher/descendants have also been told the same thing. The following has been handed down verbally in one of the Graves lines:

"The father of Charles was born in Acadia (Nova Scotia, Canada). He was a young boy when the English dispersed the Acadians along the east coast Colonies in 1775. He became separated from his family and was put on a boat to Boston, MA. He was taken in by a family by the name of Graves and at some point in time he took their name. His original last name was "DuTellie".

From another line: "A young boy (Charles's father) and girl with a last name of "LeGardeur" came from Normandy, France and were adopted by a family by the name of Graves. These children were related to Count DeTilly".
So far, these "family stories" have yet to be proven, although many undertake the research trying to either substantiate or disprove these claims. However, they may be clues to the ancestry of Charles.
