She was born 13 October 1837 in Marshall, Onieda County, New York, and died 16 February 1920 in Ovid Township, Branch County, Michigan.

Notes for L
OUIS GRAVES:
Louis & Abigail moved from Wisconsin to Michigan between 1856 & 1858. They are first found in Muskegon Village, Muskegon Co.,MI, in 1860 with their children Mortimer & Caroline. Louis was working as a Day Laborer, probably at one of the sawmills in the area. His personal property value at that time was $50. In 1864, Louis bought for $50, a piece of property in Muskegon Village from his parents.
In 1870 he is listed as living in the 2nd ward in the City of Muskegon, with a Real Estate value of $1000 and personal property value at $100. The couple's family had increased, adding 4 more children, Walter, Estella, Charles and Evaline. Louis & family are listed as living on the corner of Western Ave & 5th St. in 1875.
Sometime between 1875 and 1880 the family moved to Bridgton twp, Newaygo Co.,MI. There, Louis took up farming for the next 15 years. Here they had 2 more daughters, Elnora & Blanche and a son, Harris. Their son Henry M., had died by 1884 and their widowed daughter-in-law, Colon, and grandchildren, Ethel & Perry were living with them. There were also 3 male boarders living with them, likely hired by Louis to help with the farm.
The 1894 Newaygo Co. census shows the couple had a total of 11 children, 9 of whom were living at the time of the census.
In 1896 the family moved back to Muskegon probably due to Louis becoming ill.
Abigail petitioned the court to have Louis committed to the Northern Michigan Asylum for the Insane, Traverse City, MI in 1899. According to his obituary he had been "sick" for 6 years. He died the same year he was committed. The cause of death on his death certificate is "Insane" The physician's notes in Probate Court records state that his "Attitude, Manners and Habits" make him a likely candidate for the Institution in Traverse City. The terminology "Insane" was widely used in those days, more than likely this term, in Louis' case, meant he had Alzheimer disease or Dementia of some sort, given his age.
No doubt Abigail had little choice in her decision to have her husband committed, she had 2 children still at home and probably could no longer care for her ailing spouse.

In 1900, Abigail, her daughters Eva & Blanche, and her son Harry lived in a rented home on Mason Ave. in the city of Muskegon. The 3 children all worked, Eva as a Forelady in a factory, Blance also worked in a factory and Harry was a Machinist.
Abigail is later found living with her married daughter Eva Blaine in the 1910 Dayton twp, Newaygo Co.,MI census.

  ii.   MORTIMER GRAVES, b. 03 March 1856, Wisconsin; d. 08 April 1884.
  Notes for MORTIMER GRAVES:
It is possible that Mortimer and brother, Henry M. are twins. They are both listed as born in Wisconsin in 1856. Twins may have run in the family as their grandparents, Charles & Clarissa Graves have twin daughters, Adeline & Caroline, they were both born in 1842.
Mortimer was also known as "Martin".
In 1870, at 13 years of age, he attended school in Muskegon.

15. iii.   CAROLINE B. GRAVES, b. 23 May 1858, Michigan; d. 07 March 1904.
iv.   LESTER GRAVES, b. 1859, Wisconsin; d. 01 January 1861, Newaygo county, Michigan.
  Notes for LESTER GRAVES:
It has not been proven that Lester is the child of Louis & Abigail. At this point until other proof is found, he is being listed as their child. Reasons for this are as follows:
1. In 1870, Lester and Mortimer Graves are listed living with Charles and also with Louis. Lester has only been found on one census, the 1870, living w/ Charles. However, because of the place of birth and that Lester's birthdate agrees with the other children of Louis & Abigail, It is likely/possible that he is their son, and for some reason he and Mortimer stayed with their grandparents for part of the 1870 census year.
2. The 1894 Bridgeton twp, Newaygo Co., MI census and the 1900 Muskegon City, Muskegon Co. MI census, Abigail Graves is shown to have had 11 children. Adding Lester as a child of Louis & Abigail would show 11 children born to the couple.
3. It's possible there are 2 Lester Graves, one in the 1870 census age 11; one died in 1861 Newaygo county.

16. v.   WALTER EDWARD GRAVES, b. 05 October 1862, Michigan; d. 1933, Branch County, Michigan.

In 1900 Charles is living with the Hildebrandt family and working as a farm laborer.
