Notes for Eliza Mary Graves Ablard: Eliza Ablard was the oldest daughter of John B Ablard. The family moved to Canada from Lincolnshire when she was 6 years old, and she remembered parts of the ocean voyage. She was 23 when her father came to Kansas to homestead. There she met and married John Walmsley who had a nearby homestead. The Ablard family stopped at his place to ask for a drink of water as they were passing by to settle on their land. She was a member of the Christian Church. She died in her home after a short illness. Her grandson, Ira Hogg, recalled her as an astute businesswoman. in her day, English women of her class barely learned to read, and he believed she could not read numbers at all. However, she had learned to calculate in her head quite rapidly. She was very interested in helping him acquire an education and loaned him money to help with his college expenses. He said he discovered she could figure interest in her head faster than he could with paper and pencil. Ira was still attending the University of Kansas when she fell ill with her final illness and he traveled to Delphos with his 3 yr old daughter, Ruth, the weekend before she died. Ruth can just recollect her great-grandmother sitting up in bed and cheerfully visiting with them. Wilma Carkuff Griffith, niece of Leona Hotle Hogg, had another recollection of her. When Wilma was about 8 her father was pastor of hall Wesleyan Methodist Church and the parsonage was separated from the Walmsley homestead by the church cemetery. The Carkuff's purchased milk from the Walmsleys, and Wilma and her brother, Bid, were supposed to walk over every evening to get it. "That ornery Bid" liked to hide when the time came and leave the job to Wilma. She said, "I never told grandma Walmsley I was afraid and she never asked me. But when I was alone, she would say, 'You know, I feel like taking a little walk.' She would put on her coat and walk me past the cemetery. I was very fond of her."
