My first ancestor to come to America was William Chesebrough. He, his wife, and the surviving 3 children from original 12, sailed with the first Puritan fleet to help establish the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. He was a successful blacksmith. In 1649 he moved to south-east Connecticut where he was awarded 2,300 acres of wilderness land. Here he built his farm and later became one of the founders of Stonington,CT. Nathaniel Brown, the first of the Brown side of my family, arrived in Killingsby, CT in 1730. His great greatgrandson, Henry, married Esther Chesebrough. William Hogg, my first American Hogg ancestor, came to this country from County Donegal, Ireland, about 1810. He first settled in Pennsylvania where he was drafted into service in the War of 1812 for about six months. Much later he was granted bounty land in Iowa for his military service. In 1852 with four of his chidren he moved to Jackson County, IA. In 1873 his youngest son, James Renwick Hogg, moved with his family to Cloud County, KS, several miles northeast of Delphos. John Walmsley came to America from England with his mother and step-father in about 1846. He held various jobs in Canada and Chicago, and served about one year in the Civil War with no combat. He later homesteaded a farm east of Delphos, Kansas. Here he raised sheep and became one of the most successful farmers in the county owning over 800 acres of land. | Clay Hogg's Family Updated November 22, 2008 |
