John K. Simmons was a Corporal in the Confederate States Army.He signed up September 9 1862.Possible 1861.He surrendered in Greensboro, NC, under Joe Wheeler, General of the Confederate Army.Company H, 1st Cav, Confederate States Army became Company A, 12th Alabama Cavalry.On July9, 1911 he filed for pension.At that time is was 69 years old.He moved to Texas in 1867 to Athens, Henderson County, TX.John K. Simmons died July 20, 1911 and his wife Martha Ann Reed Simmons completed the filing for pension with the assistance of his two best friends A.J. Able and Jim Able.
A. J. Able , also known as Andrew J. Able, who resided inMarshall County, OK, on July 28, 1911,provided a statement on behalf of John K. Simmons when filing for pension.Evidently, there was a discrepancy in war records.A.J. was 65 at the time of interrogation.He stated he knew John K. Simmons for about 60 years and grew up with him in Gadsden, AL.He stated John K. Simmons enlisted in Company H., under Captain David Webb, at Godsden, Alabama, sometime in 1862.Company H was a part of the 12th, Alabama Battalion, which was afterward consolidated with the 1st Alabama Calvary.He served until the close of the war.
A.J. Able serving in Company D of the 19th Alabama Infantry stated John K. Simmons brother - Bill Simmons served with him in Co. D 19th AL Inf.A. J. had two brothers serving in the same company as John K. Simmons.Bill Able and Jim Able.Bill Able lives at Gadsden, Alabama and Jim Able lives at Gainesville, Texas.
Jim Able, birth name James Monroe Able was 80 years old when he provided a witness statement on behalf of John K. Simmons on August 18,1911.He verified he grew up in Calhoun County, AL and served with John K. Simmons until the close of the war.
Bill Simmons, J (William H. Simmons) John K. Simmons brother, served in A.J. Able's company. Co D 19th Al. Inf.Verified through Muster Rolls.Note that the Muster Rolls have spelled Jim and A.J.'s last name as Able"s" not Able.
