The Harder, Reed & Williams Families of Kansas

I am researching my great-grandparents and their families.

John Harder was born Johannes Harder in the Danzig, West Prussia area in 1854. He married Marie Regier in Leske, N. Germany on May 26, 1876. Their honeymoon was spent on the SS Rhineland emigrating to America. They settled in the Whitewater-Brainerd area in Butler Co., KS as part of a large Mennonite community. John and Marie had six children. After Marie's death, he married her sister, Katherine. They had three more children. John died in 1940 in Butler Co., KS.

Walter Reed was possibly born in Chariton Co., MO in 1878. He married Bertha Anna Lopshire in Salina, KS. on Dec. 26, 1905. He disappeared in Oklahoma in the 1920's, leaving behind his wife and eight children. Bertha Anna Reed died in 1954 in Bartlesville, OK.

Charles W. Williams was born on Nov. 15, 1880. He married Laura, the daughter of Jonas Louis Lawson and Mary Emma James. They had three children. He died in 1931 in Greenwood Co., KS.

    John and Katherine Harder, Sr., homeplace, 2 1/2 miles east of Whitewater, KS. (1/2 mile west of Brainerd). The land was bought in 1876. This house was built about 1912. The picture was taken between 1915 and 1920.
