MARTIN HOLBROOK 692 Martin Holbrook was born around 1829 son of Ezekiel Holbrook and Susannah Crouse and married Mary Lyon, daughter of Alexander Lyon and Sarah Sparks. Mary was born on Sept. 27, 1821 and died Oct. 15, 1891. Martin was buried at his old homeplace near the present home of Hubert McMenamin in Dockery, and Mary was buried with her Lyon family at Old Roaring River Church in Traphill. They had 5 children: Thirza, Emeline, Ellen R., Winfrey and Millison. Two of the Holbrook girls, Thirza and Ellen R., married Miles brothers, sons of John Miles and Mary Jane Adams. Thirza born June 23, 1851 married Willis Miles, born April 7, 1847. They had 12 children, some of whom died early. James Franklin born 1868 married a Blackburn; he was accidentally shot and died in 1895. Laura Elvira married Bruce Eller. Rebecca E. born Oct. 13, 1872 did not marry. Lodemia born 1875 married Melvin Holbrook. John M. born 1879 married Sarah Jane Waddell. W. Roscoe married Maggie Porter, daughter of James Porter and Susan Higgins. Lura Ann married Thomas Morgan Lyons, son of Thomas M. Lyons and Ruth Wood. Martha Luell born May 28, 1886 married Thomas Welborn Shumate, son of Toliver Shumate. Trealey A. born Oct. 26, 1890 married Ava Caroline Pendry, daughter of James L. Pendry and Hannah Hinshaw. Emeline Holbrook was born Feb 14, 1854 and married 1st. In 1877 to Avery Henry Shumate by whom she had 3 children: One on, died young; Emma Arlene born May 12, 1879 married John S. Hall: and Dora born Oct. 1, 1882 married Elbert C. Jennings. Emeiline married 2nd. Wilson Walker, born Sept 30 1879. She died Jan. 16. 1947 Ellen R. Holbrook was born March 17, 1856 and married on March 6. 1874 Alfred Miles. They had 4 daughters: Lou Emma born Dec 1874 married 1. Frank Myers. Son of William Augustus Myers and Eliza Jane Madison. Married 2. Columbus Huie and 3. John Quincy Adams, son of William Rufus Adams and Elizabeth Holbrook. Clementine J. born Oct. 1879 married Andrew Patrick Bowers son of William Bowers and Nancy J Holbrook, Lettie Ann born Dec. 16. 1883 married Major Hardin Brown, son of Joshua Brown and Mary Elizabeth Hayes and they had 10 children. Nancy J was born July 1884. Winfrey Holbrook was born May 10, 1859 and married Mary Ann Caudill, who was the daughter of Rev. Jackson J Caudill. Skilled carpenter and minister, and his first wife Mary Lafoon. Mary Ann was born May 25,1865 and died Oct. 27, 1958. She was the aunt of Paul Caudill, well-known Baptist Minster who spent most of his religious career pastoring churches in Atlanta, Ga., and Memphis. Tenn. Winfrey had a deep, rich voice and loved to sing; he conducted singing schools at neighborhood churches. He and Mary Ann had 7 children: Minnie, Dinah, Alonzo M., Mersey, Mattie, Bertha and Nona. He died Sept 13,1929 and is buried with His wife at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Minnie Emma, oldest child of Winfrey and Mary Ann Holbrook, was born May 19,1885 and married 1. Aquilla A. Freeman. Born Jan. 29, 1876 by which she had 2 children, Nona B. who married Homer Monroe Waddell, son of W.C. Waddell and Rose Ann Smoot. And Garneous who died young on July 3, 1918. Minnie married 2 on July 28, 1910 Vance Taylor. They had 2 children: Thelma Mae who married Oscar Moxley and Faith who is presently married to Wilfred Elza Loomis. Minnie married 3. In 1919 to Hubert Francis McMenamin, a young Irishman born Sept. 5, 1881, son of Hubert and Mary McMenamin. Hubert F. remembered coming to this country from Ireland as a boy of 14 tagged for identification and help in reaching his St. Louis destination. He worked as steam shovel operator on the Traphill road when it was being built around 1918 and met his future wife, Minnie, during the time his work crew were camped in the Dockery area. He and Minnie had 3 children: Teresa married 1. Dennis Woody, by whom she had four children, married 2. Norman Warren. Hubert F., Jr. married Daphne Sidden, daughter of Dewey Sidden and Elizabeth Hutchinson. Kathleen married Reid Miles, son of Trealey A. Miles and Ava C. Pendry, who is owner of a trucking business. Their son Michael Reid is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and District Manager of Automatic Data Processing Co. in Winston-Salem; twins Jesse Larry and James Garry became ministers, following the tradition of their Caudill ancestors; and Johnny is in charge of mechanics at Hammrey Trucking after his training at Forsyth Tech in Winston-Salem. Hubert Sr. died May 14, 1944 and Minnie died on April 26, 1975. Dinah born Dec. 1886 married John Marlow. Alonzo Martin, born Sept. 5. 1887 married 1 Verta Mae Brown, daughter of George Brown and Myrtle Elizabeth Holbrook and they moved to Maryland. He married 2. Leaford Blackburn. Mersey Nevada born Sept. 1890 married John Morris Childress. And Mattie Olive born July 1892 married J Walter Brewer, son of Ambrose Brewer and Alice Emerson. Bertha born Sept. 1894 married 1. James Sebastian by whom she had 6 children. She married 2. Mr. Steelman. Millison Holbrook born 1862, last child of Martin Holbrook and Mary Lyon, married Callie Eller Durham, son of John Durham and Sarah Sparks. He was born June 17, 1857 and died Oct. 26, 1917. They had 5 children: Mary A. born May 1882, Ola born 1887 who married Dock Higgins, son of Silas and Susie Higgins, Waiter A. born Oct. 1890, John Marshall born March 12, 1895 who married Bertha Combs, and Rosa Lee born May 16, 1899 who married RV.
