| My main family research has been with the descendants of Revolutionary War veteran Charles Holt (b.1762 Prince William Co. VA - d.1847 Blount Co. AL) m.1785 to Martha (possibly a Rackley/Ratliff) in Franklin Co. NC. His migration west included moves from Granville Co. NC to Franklin Co. NC, to Spartanburg Co. SC, to Franklin Co. GA, to Hickman Co. TN, to Dickson Co. TN, to Rutherford Co. TN, to St Clair Co. AL (where he finally appeared on Fed. 1820 Census). He first had land in Jefferson Co. AL, and then land in Blount Co. AL where he then lived until his death in 1847. I believe "without proper documentation" that Charles' father was the John Holt of Granville Co. NC, who is on record in that county as early as 1766, 4 years after Charles' birth. This John is listed with a family close to Charles on the 1784-87 Granville Co. NC state census. Apparent daughter Anne Holt and her husband John Thomas also lived close by. As the current administrator of the Holt Surname Project through Family Tree DNA, I have connected Charles to a John Holt who married Sarah Fuller in Granville Co. NC and raised a family there before moving to Laurens Co. SC in the same time frame as Charles' move to Spartanburg Co. SC. This John, I call John II or Jr, is evidently a brother to Charles and James who married Sarah Heflin. Using marriage records, 1784-87 NC census, later NC-SC-TN-AL census; Tax records, court and property records, I have put together my speculative family for John Holt Sr. This John Holt signed the oath of allegiance in Granville Co. NC in 1777; was granted the land in 1778 on which he was living; it appears that Charles Holt, a teenager by then, was listed as a chain bearer on the surveyors report for that land. It was then a common practice for a member of the family to serve as a chain bearer for the surveyor. Both Charles & John Sr. appear on Granville Co. Tax roles, and this Holt family are the only Holt's listed on the 1784-87 & 1790 census, the tax rolls. land and marriage records in Granville County during the period from 1766 to 1800. The John Holt I refer to above was listed on the 1790 census of Granville Co. NC which was taken from tax records (therefore no family was listed). Charles and Martha had moved by that time to be near her family in Franklin Co. NC. Charles stated that he lived in Granville Co. before and after his Rev. War service of 8 months in the NC Militia. He also indicated a residency in Franklin Co. NC before his migration westward. *************************************************************** I have recently used tests by Family Tree DNA to prove that there was no relationship whatsoever between Charles Holt and Germanna Colony VA migrant Hans Michael Hold (Holt), later of Orange Co. and Alamance Co. NC. This absolute proof should correct erroneous publications by other researchers who have endorsed that connection. See: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/holt and http://holtfamilydnaproject.com I also proved a relationship between descendants of Charles Holt, John Holt Jr, and James Holt by DNA comparisons. *************************************************************** Any help "proving" the siblings and parents of Charles and Martha would be greatly appreciated. We believe that Martha was a Rackley. See the Reports below for further information. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My other main line would be my mother's. She was a descendant of John Reid of Scotland/Ireland (b.abt.1750) and Martha Fraser of Scotland. John reportedly returned to Scotland to marry Martha and then they were unable to return to Virginia because of the Revolutionary War. They later returned and settled in Campbell Co. VA. Their first son, Theodore Henderson Reid, who married Sarah Barksdale Harvey, moved with his family to Franklin Co. AL in the mid 1830's. 8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 |
