2. JOHN4 SMICE, JR. (JOHANNES3 SCHMEISS, JOHANN MARTIN2, PHILLIP1)5 was born Abt. 1786 in Chanceford Township, York County, PA5, and died Abt. 1830 in Washington County, MD5. He married CATHARINE E. PARKS5 Bet. 1800 - 1810 in Tell Township, Huntingdon County, PA5. She was born Bet. 1789 - 1790 in Tell Township, Huntingdon County, PA5, and died October 26, 1872 in Ogle County, IL5.

Notes for J
OHN SMICE, JR.:
John Smice, Jr. is the son of Johannes and Maria Schmeiss and the brother of Peter Smice. John Smice, Jr. was born about 1786 in Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He married Catharine E. Parks sometime between 1800-1810 in Tell Township, Huntingdon County, PA. John Smice, Jr. served in the War of 1812 with the 11th Division/46th Pennsylvania Regiment.
It is believed John and Catherine Smice had six children: Mary, John III, Elizabeth, Margaret "Peggy", Nancy, and Catherine Barbara. John Smice, Jr. died about 1830 in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. In 1848, John's widow, Catharine, moved her family to the Pine Creek Township area of Ogle County, Illinois. It is thought that Catharine Smice made this trip with her brother-in-law, Peter Smice. In the census records of Ogle County, Illinois during this time period, Catharine Smice is referred to as a "widow". Catharine Parks Smice died October 26, 1872 and is buried in the Grand Detour Cemetery, Grand Detour, Ogle County, Illinois.

1810 U.S. CENSUS:

Males 26-44 - one (John Smice, Jr)

HUNTINGDON COUNTY, PA notes:
A son, John Smice Jr., was born to Johannes and Maria Schmeiss circa 1786. John Smice Jr. was present with John Smice Sr. on the 1790 census in Washington County, MD, and on the 1800 census, Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, PA. John Smice Jr. paid taxes as a "single freeman" in 1807, Dublin Township, Huntingdon County, PA. In 1810, Tell Township was formed out of Dublin Township. John Smice Jr. appeared on the 1810 census for Tell Township as head of household and paid taxes on 1 cow for the years 1810, 1811, and 1812.

WAR OF 1812:
According to the PA Archives, Vol 9, 6th Series, page 23, John Smice Jr. was drafted (age 28) into the 46th Regiment in the War of 1812. On page 645, John Smice Jr. is listed in the 11th Division at Erie, Pennsylvania in March 1813. Volume 8, page 99 lists John Smice Jr. as being discharged about 5 November 1813 from the Company of William Morris of the Pennsylvania Militia. The military records in the National Archives include a note which reads: "Deserted July 9, '13". This may have been a mistake or he may have gone AWOL (UA) and returned, since he was discharged about 5 November 1813.

TAXES:
In 1813, John Smice Jr. paid taxes on 3 cows. He continued paying taxes through 1816 on one cow. For the year 1817, John Smice Jr. paid taxes on one horse and Traxler's land. In the meanwhile, a daughter was born 28 August 1815. Then, John Smice Jr. appeared for the last time on the 1820 census, living in Hagerstown, MD. John Smice Jr. died between 1820 and 1830, since the 1830 census of Washington County, MD lists a "Widow Smice".

Notes for G
EORGE SMICE:
George Smice was the son of Johannes and Maria Schmeiss and the brother of Peter Smice. George was born about 1790 in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. George Smice was probably the son "under age 16" as listed in the 1790 census concerning the John Smice family. This "John Smice" was the Hessian soldier, Johannes Schmeiss. George Smice was again listed in the 1810 census as being between age 10 and 16. George Smice next appeared as a "single freeman" tax payer in Tell Township, Huntingdon County, PA in 1812, owning one horse.

WAR OF 1812:
In the Pennsylvania Archives, Volume 9, 6th Series, page 5, at age 23, George Smice is shown as having been drafted into the 46th Pennsylvania Regiment, in March of 1813, for the War with England.

TAXES:
George Smice also appears as paying taxes on one horse (single freeman) in 1813. George Smice is again listed as a single freeman, paying taxes in 1815. On the 1816 tax duplicate, George Smice's name is "scratched off".

George Smice moved back to Maryland with his family. George married Susanna Creek and appeared in Washington County, MD on the 1830 census. George Smice then moved to Pickaway County, Ohio; then to Clearfield County, PA; and before 1840, he moved to Columbiana County, Ohio. In the meanwhile, George Smice married Susanna Creek about 1820. Susanna Creek was born about 1802 in Maryland. She died January 17, 1866 in Allamaker County, Iowa. About 1847, George Smice and his family migrated to Grandview, Louisa County, Iowa. George Smice appeared in Louisa County, Iowa on the 1850 census. George Smice died in 1853 at the age of 63 or 64. It is known that George and Susanna raised nine (9) children: Elizabeth Ann, Jacob, Susanna, John, George, William, Harrison, Westley, and David.

PETER4 SMICE (JOHANNES3 SCHMEISS, JOHANN MARTIN2, PHILLIP1)13 was born March 21, 1801 in Tell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania13, and died January 30, 1884 in Grand Detour, Township, Ogle County, IL13. He married ELIZABETH PARKS13 June 27, 1824 in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland13. She was born May 24, 180713, and died October 03, 1849 in Pine Creek Township, Ogle County, IL13.

Notes for P
ETER SMICE:
Peter Smice was the father of Nathan Smice. Both were long-time residents of Ogle County, Illinois. Peter Smice was born March 2, 1801 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Peter Smice was the son of Johannes Schmeiss and Maria Elizabeth French. Johannes Schmeiss (John Smice) was a Hessian soldier, captured at the Battle of Trenton during the Revolutionary War. Johannes became a P.O.W. and sent to Pennsylvania. Johannes married and settled in Pennsylvania.
On June 27, 1824, Peter Smice married Elizabeth Parks in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland. The ancestors of Elizabeth Parks are unknown at this time. Peter and Elizabeth Smice were probably members of the Lutheran church in Maryland. In 1844, Peter and Elizabeth moved their family to Ohio, possibly Miller Township, Knox County. In 1848, the Peter Smice family migrated to Ogle County, Illinois. Peter and Elizabeth Smice are known to have had ten (10) children: Margaret, Susanna, Elizabeth, Rebecca, John, George, Amelia, Mary L., Nathan, and Alonzo Keith.
Elizabeth Parks Smice was stricken with "Bilious Cholic" and died on October 3, 1849. Cemetery records state that Elizabeth was "sick one day". Elizabeth's death left Peter with several small children. It is believed that Peter never remarried. Elizabeth Parks Smice is buried in the Pine Creek Brethren Cemetery (Dunkard's Cemetery), Pine Creek Township, Ogle County, Illinois.
In January of 1851, Peter Smice received a land patent for forty (40) acres in the area of Grand Detour and Pine Creek, Ogle County, Illinois. Peter Smice was a farmer and became a long-time resident of Grand Detour, Illinois. He died January 30, 1884 in Grand Detour, Ogle County, Illinois. Peter Smice is buried next to his wife in the Pine Creek Brethren Cemetery.
