John Lewis was actually Albert Sidney Dobbins who was listed on the 1870 census as Albert S. age 3. John left home when he was 17 years old because of some trouble with the Federal authorities during Reconstruction. We have not been able to determine exactly what the problem was, but he changed his name to John Lewis and moved south to Birmingham, Al. He lived to be 92 years old.
