Commodore James Barron I (b. Abt. 1726, d. May 14, 1787)
James Barron I (son of Samuel Barron I)52 was born Abt. 1726 in Virginia, and died May 14, 1787 in Virginia. He married Jane Cowper.
Notes for James Barron I: Note: James Barron, Commodore of the Virginia State Navy, was a senior officer in 1779. In 1780, he was appointed Commodore of all the armed vessels of the Commonwealth - a position that he held until his death. According to the testimony of his son, Capt. James Barron, Jr.: "My father, the late Commodore James Barron, entered the naval service in December 25th, 1775 as captain was commissioned as commodore of the armed vessels of this commonwealth in July 1780 (after I (Captain James Barron Jr) had entered the service as a midshipman), and to my certain knowledge continued in the Naval Service until the close ofthe war, and afterwards commanding the armed vessels of the Commonwealth until his death which occurrred on the14th of May 1787."

Barron and Elizabeth McLachlin, his wife. Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of James Barron. James Barron served in the Virginia navy, and was a member of the Virginia Board of War. He was born at Hampton, where he died, 1787.
