Descendants of Joshua Adams

Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM JAMES2 ADAMS (JOSHUA1) was born January 16, 1846 in Tippah County, Mississippi, and died November 01, 1892 in Godley, Texas (later moved to Sandflat Cemetery). He married MARTHA MALINDA HIETT December 06, 1865 in Tippah Co, MS, In the home of her parents, daughter of JOHN HIETT and MARY BERRY.

Notes for W
ILLIAM JAMES ADAMS:
Per Valeska Vicars information,
on November 1, 1863, William James Adams, who was almost 18 years old, enlisted in the Confederate Army. He served in Company K and in Company L of the Second Mississippi Cavalry under Colonel W. L. Lowry and Brigadier General Armstrong. In the final days of the war the Second Mississippi Calvarly was consolidated with the Eleventh Mississippi Cavalry. So his discharge papers are listed with this last unit having served in Company D. Wm. James was in the battles of Jackson, harrisburg, Rome, Henrietta, New Hope and was with Hood on his Tennessee tour from Atlanta, Georgia, to Franklin, Tennessee. He entered the service with the rank of Private and was discharged with the rank of Corporal. Wm James was discharged from the Confederate Army on May 16, 1865 in Columbus, Mississippi. He returned home to Ripley, to his brothers and sisters and sweetheart Martha Malinda Hiett. On the fourth day of December, William James and James Preston Adams together posted bond of $200.00 for the marriage of William James to Martha M. Hiett. The marriage took place on December 6, 1865, in the home of her parents John Charles Hiett and Mary Teresa Berry Hiett. To the union of Martha and William James Adams ten children were born.

In the Old Buncombe County, N.C. Heritage Book in Bio #440, Mathew Patterson, page 288 shows a picture of William James and wife Martha and child Lizzie Alma Adams. The picture was taken in Weatherford, Texas in 1883.

William James had a heavy burden with his brothers and sisters to rear and now a wife and his own children. The South had been hurt financially and the Ripley area was no exception. One hundred and sixty acres of land that Joshua had bought in Marshall County was sold by the state for back taxes in 1868. Since Joshua and Rebecca had died intestate the Tippah County Court records in Ripley contain many entries regarding the case. On March 18, 1867, $1000.00 bond was made to the state of Mississippi by Lorenzo Dow Adams, E.F. Jordan and D.A. Burnett so that Lorenzo could act as administrator. Lorenzo then sold 80 acres of his own land to the heirs of Joshua, this is recorded on August 18, 1867. On the third Monday in September, 1867, all the heirs were summoned to court, at which time Lorenzo Dow Adams gave his final account as administrator.
The 1870 U.S. Census lists Wm. James Adams and his family along with his two sisters, Mary and Ida, and one brother Tandy. Wm. James is farming in Tippah County, Mississippi, with a real estate value of $800.00 and personal property value $651.00 In the court records of December 16, 1871, there is an estate money settlement which states that Wm. James is now guardian of Tandy Young, Samuel W., Mary M. and Ida. It also states that Robert Benjmine was then living in Texas.
In the spring of 1872 the Adams families which had been so close and dependent on each other began to part for unknown territory. The push ever westward was being felt and Lorenzo Dow Adams and his sons soon answered that call. They moved to the Sandflat area of Johnson County, Texas. William James Adams family along with his in-laws, the John Charles Hiett family, moved to Conway, Arkansas. It is felt that the two groups may have traveled together as far as Arkansas and then parted.
Arkansas proved to be a place of great sadness for Wm. James family. They lost two children there, Fernando Lee age 2-1/2, and Carrie age one month. Other close family members that died were Billie Hiett and Mary T. Berry Hiett. Billie was Martha M. Adam's brother, and Mary was her mother. One family legend tells how Wm. James killed a young bear by stuffing a blanket into its mouth, then using a knife to kill it, so that his family might have food. On December 28, 1872, Rev. Thomas B. Wier, father of Mary Jane Wier Adams, bought from Wm. James his interest in the inherited land for $80.00. The next year, on September 29, 1873, Robert B. and Tandy Young sold their land inheritance to Rev. T.B. Wier for $60.00. As a note of interest, Samuel W. sold his land for $60.00 on November 5, 1877, to Rev. Weir.
In 1875, William James and family moved to Johnson County, Texas to live in the Sandflat area wich is near Cleburne, Texas. Thus joining both of his younger brothers and their families, and his Uncle Lorenzo Dow Adams and his children's families. Also, coming at this time were James Preston Adams and Margaret Adams Lewellen and their families. The Sandflat community thought there was no end to the Adams clan. This must have been a time of great happiness for everyone as there was a lot catching up to be done. The joy of this reunion was to be shortlived however, for on December 19, 1876, Lorenzo Dow was murdered. This senseless act stunned the whole community and both Adams families lost their "father" figure.
The 1880 U.S. Census lists Wm. James and family and Tandy Young and his family as living in the Godley area of Johnson County, Texas. Robert B. and his family were close by, but Samuel W. and his family had moved to Fayette County, Texas. Mary M. Ballenger was living in Bosque County and Ida Louise Gaither was located in Ellis County, Texas.
Wm. James was elected Justice of the Peace of Precinct #8 in 1888 and again in 1890. In October 1889 he pledged $150.00 to help erect a college building to be located in Cresson, Texas, which was to cost the total sum of $10,000.
Early in 1891 Robert B. moved his family to Bosque County, Texas. Then the sudden death of Wm. James occurred on November 1, 1892. He was buried in the Unity Baptist Church yard which was just across the highway from his farm on Highway 171. The church building was torn down in 1930 and the graveyard had fallen victim to the elements of time. After several attempts to revive interest in local maintenance of the cemetery without success, William James Adams was disinterred on June 16, 19 and moved to the Sandflat Cemetery where he is buried next to his Uncle lorenzo Dow Adams. Two stones mark his grave; one is the original marker which cost $35.00 as noted on the estate inventory and one is a Confederate Army Service marker. The oldest son, for so long had shouldered the responsibility of raising the brothers and sisters in addition to his own children was now gone. Slowly the different branches of the Joshua Adams family began to drift their separate ways, soon losing contact with each other.
The Wm. James Adams family bible is in possession of Mildred Fox Gentry who was living in Moore, Oklahoma in 1979.

For some years Thomas J. the batchelor, had been making his home with his brother Robert B. In the final years, the Adams families were once again close to each other.
