Notes for Johannes (John) Wilhelm Moericke:
From: "Standard History of Waupaca County, Wisconsin" Edited by John M. Ware 1917.
JOHN W. MOERICKE. Among the Dupont Township farms that are deserving of mention as places of value in, a material sense and as homes of thrifty and energetic citizens, there is the Moericke place occupied by John W. Moericke, one of the most progressive of the younger generation of farmers in Waupaca County.
Mr. Moericke has spent a large part of his life in this county, though he was born in Shawano County, Wisconsin, September 10, 1870. His parents were August and Florentinea (Mallow) Moericke. Both were natives of Germany, but came to America when still single and were married in Dodge County, Wisconsin. After their marriage they lived in Shawano and Waupaca counties, and the father was an active farmer all his career. When he moved into Grant Township of Shawano County he made the journey with wagon and ox team. He arrived in time to secure a tract of virgin land just as nature had left it, and secured his title from the Government. It consisted of eighty acres, and he also bought another eighty from individual owners. With the aid of his family he cleared up and developed a good farm there, but in 1884 removed to another place in Dupont Township of Waupaca County. He lived a long and useful career and died at Marion in June, 1915. His wife died in the fall of 1909. Besides what they did in a material way, they reared and provided for a family of thirteen children who grew up in their home. The names of these children were: Minnie, William, Gusta, Fred, Mary, Martha, John W., Flora, Lydia and Clara.
John W. Moericke was about fourteen years of age when his parents came to Waupaca County. In the meantime he had attended school in Shawano County and he also had instruction for several terms in this county. Growing up on a farm, he became accustomed to its duties and responsibilities at an early age, and on choosing a career for himself he decided on agriculture. His first independent farming was done on his father's place in the central part of Dupont Township. He began there about 1895 and aside from a year and a half spent at Marion he continued on that home until he moved in 1905 to the place he now owns. This comprises 200 acres, thoroughly tilled and improved, and some of the better buildings on the place are the direct result of Mr. Moericke's enterprise. He runs a good dairy and keeps the better grades of Holstein. cattle.
In March, 1897, Mr. Moericke married Miss Anna Ehlert. She was born in 1878, in Germany, and in 1883 was brought to America by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Ehlert. Both parents were natives of Germany and after they came to America made their home at Ravensville, and later moved to Pella, where by hard work they cleared a good farm. They had a family of eleven children, six boys and five girls, and nine are still living. Mrs. Ehlert died in 1914, but her husband is still living. Mr. and Mrs. Moericke are the parents of five children: Chester, Harvey, Lilly, Elda and Elmer. The family are members of the Evangelical Association, and Mr. Moericke is affiliated with the Guardians of Liberty of Marion.
