      244. John Alley5 Hoodenpyle (Jesse4, Robert3 Hoodenpyl, David2, Philip Gijsberti1) was born January 09, 1884, and died December 22, 1920 in Dunlap, Tennessee. He married Maude Kilgore December 23, 1904 in Daus, Sequatchie Co, TN, daughter of Benjamin Kilgore and Melinda Jackson.

Notes for John Alley Hoodenpyle:
John Alley lived in the Daus community and worked in the Coal Mines of Sequatchie County. He died in Dec 1920 from a mining accident. A rock fell from the supported ceiling and he was critically injured with a head wound. No income or support was available and the depression was in full swing. Three more children were born to Maude in the following years, then she died in 1932. Afterwards, Emma, 13 & Cornelius, 8, (my father), were sent to an Orphanage in Nashville where they were separated. Emma stayed until she was 18 after attending school in Tullahoma, TN. After returning home, she married Walter Hatfield at age 21. Cornelius had returned earlier, after finishing the 6th grade, to live with his grandmother, Janie Kilgore once convincing the orphanage that his grandmother and brother Homer would be responsible and support him. He lived at his grandmothers house and worked in local farms while going to school. Years later, my father, Cornelius, would vist the Orphanage while visiting my mother's sister, Marie (Campbell) Thurman in Nashville. He would walk once around the grounds with me and remember & talk. Although I can't remember what he said, I do remember a sense of his relief, his caring, his missed love, but a thankfulness for his own family. He tried to connect with one boy walking by the inside parameter fence, and after a few words, gave him what change he had in his pocket and said goodby.
By David A. Hoodenpyle

(Information obtained from Crayton & Mary Mosley):
John Alley was baptized into the Church by Bro. Billy Brooks. He had a very close friend named Crayton Mosley. John was a coal miner and was killed in a coal mine. John Alley and Crayton Mosley had just finished lunch, when they went back into the mines (Palmetto Coal Company Mines in Cartwright, TN) to load coal, there a big rock fell on John Alley and killed him instantly. Crayton was there when this happend and even though rumors said that John Alley was taken by pieces and wraped in a sheet was not true. Crayton said that they got him out in one piece. Before John Alley was killed, he and Crayton were singing the song "Rock of Ages", and the last words were " let me hide myself in thee". Crayton said that he led the singing the night John Alley repented before the Church. John missed only one prayer meeting from the time he repented and was baptized until his death.

Notes for Maude Kilgore:
By David A. Hoodenpyle as told by Emma (Hoodenpyle) Hatfield:
Maude's husband had died in the coal mines at the age of 36 in Dec of 1920. The coal industry was entering a decline and was used as a second income for the local farmers. Times were hard as the country entered the depression. Without a husband and an income, Maude left the farm to live in the city of Dunlap by the courthouse at the age of 32 and with 5 children (one had died in 1912). Cleaning houses, ironing, and domestic services allowed the family to survive. One more child died in 1924. Cornelius was born that same year and two more were born and died at birth. During the birth of the last child, Maude died in August of 1932 at the age of 43. Three of her 5 living children (Homer 23, Opal 17 , & Allie 15) were old enough to make it on their own, while two (Emma 12 & Cornelius 8) were sent to an orphanage in Nashville.

By Burma Ray (Ewton):
Maude died during the birth of her last child Aug 26, 1932. She was not attended to by a Doctor but a mid-wife. She found the birth not a single as she thought, but a twin birth. One of the twins had died and caused damage to the Maude's system (possible toxic syndrone) which took her life and possibly the brother, James Edward who died 3 days later. Maude died on a Friday and James Edward died on Monday evening. Maude had lived on money from the mines where her husband John Alley Hoodenpyle had worked and died. When the money ran out, she took in washings to feed and clothe her children.
