This photo of my great-great-grandfather was taken around 1861, when he enlisted in the 17th Mississippi Infantry of the Confederate Army. He served for all four years of the Civil War, participating in battles including Manassas, Maryland Heights, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg (where was wounded). In 1865, he carried the last military dispatch of the Confederacy to General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox courthouse. He was present at the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant.
