I am searching for James and Carter families in Henry County, VA. and Forsyth County, NC between 1870 and 1900. I am looking for Henry Carter who may had a daughter named Lucy born in 1875 who was later adopted by a James, or he may have adopted a child named Lucy who was born a James. She married a Calvin Lee Beck and was living in Forsyth County, NC by 1900. Her death certificate says she was born in Henry County, VA. and gives her father's name as Henry Carter. She may have had a sister named Anne or Ann who was married and living in Mebane, NC, in the 1930's, possibly married to a Cheek. Tradition is that Lucy and Ann were adopted by different families, but it is beggining to appear that Lucy and Ann were not sisters, but relatives. Ann's family probably took Lucy in when her father , who was probably Peter Carter, died when she was around four year of age. Lucy was probably born a Carter. I am unable to determine where the family story about her birth or adoption as a James came from. Her middle name was usually given as James.
