Notes for Jabez 'James' Hooks: NOTE: According to the 1840 census, James Hooks, Sr. only had two sons. One is obviously Armblin, the other either Jabez or James. The deed to part of the family homestead was given to Jabez. Jabez is enumerated with mother Lucy in 1850 (Simpson County) but in 1860 Lucy is living with son James in Covington County. According to census records, Jabez was born in 1831 and James in 1833. In light of the 1840 census and the fact that Lucy was living with James in 1860, I feel that the two were actually one person; probably named Jabez James Hooks. Age differences in census records are rife so I do not belive that is a serious flaw in the logic. "Jabez" was underage on all censuses prior to 1860 so he was stuck with a name he probably did not like. In 1860 he was his own man, living on his own property so he chose which name he preferred.
