James David HOPPER
I am trying to find information about my husband's Great
Grandfather, James David Hopper who may have been born in Ireland in about 1822-24. Family story says he was born in Ireland, but Census information says Alabama on 1880 Census, and SC on 1870 census. He is said to have come to America with his two sisters in about 1850-55. The sisters stayed in North Carolina and James David went on to Alabama where he had other
family. He was first in Pike Co.,Alabama. He purchased land in
Pickens county, AL. in 1858, and ended up in Lamar Co. Alabama where he died on July 15, 1893.
Great grandfather James David HOPPER is our earliest know Hopper ancestor. I do not know the names of the two sisters who stayed in the Carolinas.
James David HOPPER married Sarah Frances HUFF (she was born abt 1840 in Greenville county, S.C.)
I know that Sarah descends from Daniel HUFF >, Philemon HUFF >,
Avery HUFF > and Parham HUFF (her father) from Brunswick county, VIRGINIA> Greenville county, SC> to Pickens county, ALABAMA.
Family story is that James David Hopper's father's name may have been William or John, but I do not know for a fact.
Even though I have not been able to identify his parents yet, he did name his 1st son: William Perry, 2nd: John Henry, 3rd: James David Jr, 4th: Benjamin Avery. By 1858 James David Hopper is shown on Land Grants in ALABAMA and the family is shown on the Pickens county, ALABAMA census of 1870. and Lamar County, ALABAMA census of 1880.
Many of his descendants remained in the Pickens and Lamar
counties of ALABAMA and had large families.
