| Researching DAVIS, BLACKETER, ROSS, CLOUSER, SHAW, MAPES, BREWER. Mostly located in VA, WV, KY, IN, IL before 1900. Actively researching the family and descendents of William Davis, who was born about 1757 in VA. He was captured by the Shawnee Indians at age 5 and taken to Shawneetown on the Sandusky Plains of Ohio. He lived with the Indians close to 20 years and returned to Greenbrier Co. VA. to find his brother who had not died in the massacre of his family. He was written up in the Court Records of Greenbrier Co. in 1777, as being tried for Treason. "He had learnt the art of making gun powder, and they were afraid he would go back amongst the Indians with whom he had lived with for 20 years." Charges were dropped, but he had to stay within the county for 1 year. We don't know the parents of William and his brother, Richard. It was said that they were massacured along with an Uncle of William's, at the time of his capture. The Davis' may have been early settlers in Augusta, Boetourt, and/or Greenbrier Co's. Would like to connect with any descendents of this family and share information. |
