      2. James William3 Mathews (Lodowick2, James1) was born 1817 in North Carolina27,28, and died 15 November 1880 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He married Mary Ann Amelia Manning Abt. October 1847 in Probably in Norfolk County at home of her parents29,30, daughter of Mathew Manning and Mary Hodges. She was born September 1814 in Norfolk County, Virginia31, and died 4 April 1886 in Portsmouth, Virginia32,33.

Notes for James William Mathews:
Died November 15th, 1880, James W. Mathews at his residence on corner of Henry and 2nd St. [in the Gosport section of Portsmouth] Mr. Mathews was City Sargeant of this City during the yellow fever epidemic of 1855. He was also an active member of the Howard Association and rendered valuable service. He was, up to a few years before his death, a member of the City Council which as in everything required of him he performed his duty faithfully. His loss will be deeply mourned by many. He leaves a widow and one son, M. J. Mathews of this city. He was in his 65th year.

(17.00 inserted here) A good wife, mother and sister is gone. May we meet her in heaven. [Sister and one brother not yet found.]
