Marmaduke S. DAVIS (b. March 11, 1775, d. March 13, 1844)
Marmaduke S. DAVIS (son of Joshua DAVIS and Jane UNDERWOOD)32 was born March 11, 1775 in Warrington Twp., York Co., PA, and died March 13, 1844 in St. Clairsville, Belmont Co., OH. He married (1) Drusilla FORREST on April 12, 1795 in Anne Arundel Co., MD. He married (2) Eleanor WILSON on January 30, 1816 in Belmont Co, OH.
Notes for Marmaduke S. DAVIS: Marmaduke Davis' residence at time of enlistment in service of the United States was Baltimore, MD. He entered the service on January 16, 1781 at Anne Arundel Co., MD at Elk Ridge Landing on the Potapoco River (This is near Ellicott Mills, MD). His rank was private and his officers were Captain Horatio Johnston, Col. George Snell, Major Richard Stringer, and Lieutenants Cox and Griffiths. He was at the taking of Lord Cornwallis at the siege of Yorktown and was wounded in that battle. The journey to Yorktown started at Elk Ridge Landing. He then marched to Annapolis, MD - his place of rendezvous. From his group marched to Richmond, VA, to Williamsburg and then onto Yorktown (place of Cornwallis' surrender. They then marched back to Richmond and stayed there until March of 1782. He was discharged, receiving his written discharge from Lt. Col. Hamilton. His Colonel George Snell and his Major Richard Stringer became officers in the Regular Army and marched to Richmond. On July 7, 1790 he enlisted for three years at Greencastle, PA in Captain James Tower's infantry company. He was at St. Clair's defeat on the St. Mary's River on November 4, 1791 and later at a scrimmage near Fort Recovery. Later, he served under General Wayne and was discharged in July, 1793. He became a Captain in the 4th Virginia Regiment.
After his marriage in 1795, he lived five years in Uniontown, Fayette Co., PA where he was a journeyman tailor. In 1809, he began his journey to St. Louis, MO with his first stop being at St. Clairsville, OH were his wife became ill. He made St. Clairsville, OH his home. He worked for John Marchus who carried on tailoring in St. Clairsville as early as 1803. John Marchus was the first man in that business in the town. He continued to work for John for a number of years. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and reared a Quaker.
His application date for military pension was on November 17, 1832. His residence at the time was in Richland Township, Ohio. He was 72 at the date of his application. In the 1840 census he was 80 and living in St. Clairsville Twp., Belmont Co., OH. His pension Reference: W 6967; BL WT 26188 160 A 1855. This indicates widow's application with Bounty Land Warrant, number of file issued for 160 acres in 1855, which an Act of Congress allowed the children of a soldier to obtain land. There were 52,504 survivors of the War of the Revolution pensioned, including 22,644 widows.
Sources: St. Clairsville Methodist Cemetery, Richland Township, Belmont Co., OH. The cemetery where he is buried is on Newell Street in the town of St. Clairsville. Directions: Going North on SR 9 take 1st street to the right about 2 blocks from U.S. 40. it is very old (established in 1809) and covers about 3 acres. Many of the stones are broken, buried, missing or illegible. It is very well kept.
