Notes for Stanley Romaine HOPPER: Stanley was educated in the Fresno CA Schools. He graduated from USC in 1928. In 1931, he received the degree of STB from the Boston School of Theology. He studied at Harvard, at the University of Zurich and at Mansfield College, Oxford, England. He won a prize of 500 pounds in a contest conducted by the Abingdon Cokesbury Press for his book, "Crisis of Faith". In 1964, he was made Dean of the Graduate School of Drew University and Professor of Philosophy and Letters. "The new professor of Christian Ethics at Drew is one of the most erudite men of his age in the American Church." In the summer of 1947, he lectured to his ministers at the summer school in Pine Hills School of Theology. Quoting from a Boston University Professor: "His flair for relating contemporary poetry to larger thought movements can hardly be equaled .... " and the 'Crisis of Faith', unsurpassed is like the sudden appearance of a star of the first magnitude, "He brings such an educational background as few men possess in our time." He served six churches in CA, NH, PA, and CT.
Stanley is in Who's Who in America starting in 1959, where much more information concerning his life may be found. He spent the fall 1967 through summer 1968 in Tokyo, Japan and other Japanese cities on "Philosophies of Religions". He resigned his position at Drew at that time and in 1969 was lecturing and teaching in Syracuse University. He was a member of many organizations such as: The National Council of Churches, American Homiletic Association, NY Browning Society, Phi Gamma Tau, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Delta Sigma, Phi Pi Sigma, Masons, Kiwanis, etc.
Stanley married the Helen Bagby, who was the daughter of Grover Cleveland and Mabel (Bennet) Bagby. Helen was a student of USC and a musician. In 1978, Stanley was a Professor Emeritus at USC in Religion.
