Notes for Maximilian Duff HOPPER: Maximilian's family moved from NE to the Prairie District, Fresno Co., CA, later called Del Rey, where they developed 160 acres of land by growing grapes and other fruit. Maximilian attended Prairie Elementary School, Selma High School and graduated from Stanford University in Physics and Chemistry. He married before he graduated, and in order to pay expenses, he worked as an Electrician at Palo Alto, CA for a few years. One source says he was in charge of the Palo Alto power system at the time of the 1906 earthquake. He then moved to Fresno Co., CA where he engaged in raising grapes and other fruits. Later he specialized in grapes, owning 500 acres near Stockton, CA. This purchase was made when prohibition caused many to give up their farms. Maximilian realized that this was a good time to buy, not sell. He next became owner of the largest Muscat vineyard in the world for his day, the Lucerne Vineyard near Hanford, CA. He was rated as the largest individual green fruit shipper in CA, sending fruit to New York and Boston.
He built and owned a large winery on the Lucerne property. He was a director in the Valley Bank of Fresno for two or three years. His chief outside interests are music (he could play any instrument by ear) tuning his friend's pianos for fun, and he constructed a three manual electronic organ for his home, which is in Palo Alto at Luvenia Rachel Welch's home.
