William Hopper was born at sea possibly Aug 17, 1790 or Dec 1790, giving us the impression that he was the 1st child of Robert Hopper and Jean Duff, born on the way over from Ireland. After landing with his parents, he came by way of Baltimore to Fayette Co., PA and before 1800 went to Belmont Co., OH probably to Bellair or St. Clairsville and then to Somerton, near Barnesville, and lastly to Malaga in Monroe Co., OH where he and his wife both died. In Somerton he became a tanner and later a farmer and for 17 years was a Justice of the Peace. He married Phoebe Lewis, daughter of John Wesley Lewis. She was born in 1800 and raised in Upper Middletown or Connellsville, PA. She came, it is said, "Over the mountains of Pennsylvania, in a wagon, walking part of the time with a gun over her shoulders." William died on December 1, 1872 and Phoebe died on January 22, 1872. They are both buried in a little cemetery in Malaga, Monroe Co., OH. The little village of Malaga has only 26 home. The housed are large and well enough built but it is off the beaten track. The soil is poor and they are not prosperous. In the early days they raised tobacco a great deal. The country is rolling and very picturesque in the spring, with clumps of wood and dogwoods here and there, a romantic country and unspoiled William is buried in the old Malaga, Ohio cemetery.
