Descendants of John Standley

Generation No. 1

      1. John1 Standley was born 1764 in VA, and died April 05, 1852 in Carroll Co., MO. He married Rebecca Shinn, daughter of Samuel Shinn and Anna Branson. She was born 1765, and died 1834 in Carroll Co., MO.

Notes for John Standley:
Some research cousins have been looking for the parents of John Standley.

He has been assigned to three different fathers by other genealogists. One man thought to be his father is John Stanley, the Quaker who married Edith Hutchins and lived in Surry Co., NC, neighboring Wilkes Co. There is no proof of this.

Another man who has been named is John Stanley, Sr. on the 1790 census of Wilkes Co., NC. However, there is no proof of this at this time.

Harris Standley/Stanley in Wilkes Co., NC, may have had a son named John, but this with all the circumstantial evidence has not been proven. According to polls and tax lists Harris seems to be a son of a John Standley.

There seems to be some circumstantial evidence with all the men named above.

In 1999 while checking deed records we decided to get copies of 3 parcels of land sold in Wilkes in 1819 when John Standley left Wilkes to go to Carroll Co., MO. One witness on the deeds was James Standley the son of John. We have found no other James in Wilkes Co., NC, so with the date and name of son we have determined that the land sold belonged to John Standley.

James Standley and Larkin Standley witnessed the deed between George Combs and John Standley when George sold his military bounty land in Missouri to John in 1819. The deed is recorded in Carroll Co., MO.

Trying to find when and how he acquired the parcels of land has been interesting.
One parcel was easy because the two deeds matched in legal description.
Grantor Bk 24:459 is 200 acres, Cole's Mill Creek, Wit in 1780 were Wm Combs, Thomas Combs and Wm Johnson. Witnesses in 1819 were Thomas Mathis, John Lewis and James Standley.

The other two parcels sold in grantor Book L:280 and 281 is at the foot of Lazy Hill. No grantee book shows this same legal description exactly...or we have not been able to find it.

John's birth year was calculated from the 1850 census of Carroll Co., MO. If 1764 is correct then in 1780 the John with the grant of 200 acres would not have been 21. There are two women in Wilkes listed as Head of Household. Maybe one of them was John's mother or maybe John was raised in another household. The 200 acres could have belonged to John's father also named John. If his father was killed in the war then the grant could have been made to John when he was 21 in 1785. That is the date when it was recorded and may be why there is confusion as to the identity of John Standley granted the land and the John selling.

One John Sr. in Wilkes in 1790 could be John's father, but no proof has been found and this man seems to use his son, Shadrack, to witness deeds.

John Jr. of Wilkes bought his Carroll Co., MO, land from George Combs of Wilkes Co., NC. That transaction is recorded in the Carroll Co., MO land records. The titles Jr. and Sr. in early days only means that one was older than the other and not that they were related. In Carroll Co., MO, our John Standley became John Sr. and his son-in-law became John, Jr.

Notes for Rebecca Shinn:
A research cousin related to the Shinns and maybe to us in other ways, has done a lot of research on the Shinn family. Sylvia Trotter Anderson, and cousin, Mary Ann Cole have an extensive collection of research for the Shinn family.

We have no marriage record for John and Rebecca. We only know her probable father was living in Wilkes Co., NC, at the same time John Standley lived there.
The parentage for Rebecca is circumstantial but 90% conclusive.

Children of John Standley and Rebecca Shinn are:
+ 2 i.   Dicy Ann2 Standley, born 1790.
+ 3 ii.   James Standley, born November 06, 1792 in Wilkes Co., NC; died March 16, 1874 in Carroll Co., MO.
+ 4 iii.   Larkin Standley, born 1794; died December 13, 1847 in Ray Co., MO.
5 iv.   Joel Standley, born 1797.
  Notes for Joel Standley:
The Carroll Co. history books say Joel was with his father and brothers when they came to MO. If that is true then he was still alive in 1818 died in MO or on the trail between NC and MO as the family tradition says the family went to NC to visit after moving to MO.

+ 6 v.   Hugh Standley, born 1799; died July 24, 1841 in Carroll Co., MO.
+ 7 vi.   Lucy Standley, born 1800 in NC; died 1840 in Carroll Co., MO.
+ 8 vii.   Uriah Standley, born April 01, 1804 in Wilkes Co., NC; died November 07, 1879 in Carroll Co., MO.
+ 9 viii.   Elihu Standley, born February 05, 1805 in Wilkes Co., NC; died May 03, 1879 in Carroll Co., MO.
10 ix.   Miriam Standley, born 1806; died September 20, 1862. She married John Trotter in Carrollton,Carroll Co., MO.
  Notes for Miriam Standley:
Miriam's granddaughter, Miriam Trotter Goodson, said she was only about ten years old when her grandmother died, but she could well remember what a good woman she was. Mrs. Goodson said her sister, Sarah Frances, resembled her grandmother in looks.

The old family record, compiled in 1938 by Mrs. Kratz, says only of the children:
"The names of all Miriam's children were not obtained nor order of birth, except a relative said Alexander was the third child," then lists Alexander, Joel and Becca. No grandchildren were listed. Miss Eunice Goodson of Carrollton was to give Mrs. Mary Lou Dalton more information on this branch of the family, but died suddenly in her sleep 9 June 1962.

A list of 5 children were compiled from the census and vital records of Carroll Co.:
James, Rebecca, William, Alexander, Joel

  Notes for John Trotter:
His sister, Jane, married Miriam's older brother, James Standley. When the newly-wed James and Jane left KY, John accompanied them for additional protection for Jane.

John Trotter gave the land for the Trotter Cemetery where he is buried with his wife.
