Notes for Uriah Standley:
Some have March 31, 1804 for Uriah's birthdate.Maxine (Standley) Gaskill had April 1.
Uriah and his wife, Harriet (Lucas) donated land for the Rush Chapel Methodist Church.Uriah and Harriet are buried at Braden Cemetery in north Carroll Co., near Coloma.
They established their home 3 miles west of Coloma. If the land ceases to be used for a church and church yard, it reverts to the heirs of Uriah. The members wanted to call it Standley Chapel but Uriah said, "no, we will call it Rush Chapel for our preacher."
From a book by early relatives it says :
Uriah was very fond of good horses and raised them, having a race track on his farm at one time. James, Alex Trotter, John and Wakefield used to go out to Uriah's home and with James (Uriah's son) and George have grand times riding the horses.Uriah believed in the Bible command to watch as well as pray and it is said he prayed with his eyes wide open.Everyone in the early days rode horses to church and of course among so many, some would fight. In the midst of his prayer Uriah would say to George or Jeremiah, "Go out and take care of the horses, " then go on with his prayer. One day he had ridden a horse named Old Brooks to church using a new saddle.During his long prayer it began to rain.He said in the same tone as his prayer, "Jerry Bascom, go pull the saddle off of old Brooks and bring it into the church."This it seems should have brought a laugh from all preseent, but oh, no, Uncle Uriah said it and it was all right.
One of the pioneers, Mr. Henry C. Butts, who knew Uriah wrote a letter to the Carrollton Democrat in 1926 relating incidents in connection with Rush Chapel in the year 1869.The miniser was Rev. James Ragan, a Cumberland Presbyterian.Rev. Ragan was living in Carroll County in 1926 at the age of 93 and enjoying good health. In 1869 Rush Chapel was a union church and the Presbyterian and Methodist followers worshipped together. In August, 1869, an old-fashioned revival was held.Among those who attended regularly were the Standley, Braden, McCall, Henderson, Daugherty, Marple and Hundley families. In his article Mr. Butts wrote, "Uriah was a very large man with such a large head he could never buy a hat or cap to fit.His good women folks made a cloth cap for him in winter and a braided straw hat for summer."
Mr. Butts further related that Mr. Hundley, the father of Mrs. W. W. Thomas of Bogard, moved into the neighborhood from Tennessee. He was an orthodox member of the Baptist church.Beinga deacon in that church he was always ready to convince anyone that his denomination was right and all others wrong. He was anxious to do some missionary work as soon as possible, so inquired of Sam Marple, his brother-in-law, as to the leading member of the Methodist Church. He wanted to convince this Methodist that he should reform and join the Baptist Church.Mr. Hundley asked Sam to go with him over to see Uncle Uriah, whom Sam had named as the power behind the Methodist Church, and make a Baptist of him. When Mr. Marple introduced Mr. Hundley to Uncle Uriah, the latter asked Hundley what church he belonged to."Why, I am a Baptist", replied Mr. Hundley.Uncle Uriah's empahtic comment was, "If a Baptist ever gets to Heaven, it will be through the mercy of God."Mr. Hundley suggested at once that it was time to go home and that was the end of his missionary work among the good Methodists of Rush Chapel.
In 1850 Uriah joined a group from Carroll Co. who went to California to seek gold.A number of the Standley relatives went at this time, among them Wakefield, who afterward lost his life in the War between the States.Uriah's quest for gold was not successful enough to induce him to remove there permanently. He came back to his home in Carroll County where his vigorous life came to an end on Nov 7, 1879.

About the year 1814 she came to Lafayette County, soon coming into Carrol County. She was baptized by immersion in Brush Creek in the year 1826 when this form of baptism was new and hers was the first of its kind in the community. She was also the first to weave cloth in Carroll County.
