Robert sided with his half-sister, Maud, in her bid for the English throne after the death of their father, Henry I. Maud's power base was in Robert's domain in Gloucester. After three years of armed struggle, King Stephen was captured. However, Maud was arrogant and failed to secure her coronation. She managed to escape to the West, but while commanding her rearguard, Robert was captured by King Stephen's army. Matilda was obliged to swap Stepehn for Robert on 1 November 1141. Thus, the King soon reimposed his Royal authority.
