Otto Miller (photo) was born in Jul 1906 in Cleveland, Oh. He died on 29 Jan 1997 in Pasadena, California. He was a Stone Cutter in Cleveland, Oh. Otto had to quit school at the age of 16 to work with his father as a stone cutter. He gave all of his money to his family until he was 21 years old. His teachers asked his parents to allow him to stay in school because he was so bright (it was later discovered that he had an IQ of 150), however, his family was poor and he had no choice but to quit to help support them.

At Otto's sister Rose's wedding in 1926 Adeline and Otto met. Rose arranged the meeting because Otto had just broken his engagement with someone else. Adeline was the bridesmaid for her first cousin Frank, and Otto a groomsman for his sister. Adela was the maid of honor because Rose had very few friends! After the two met they dated, and were eventually married in Cleveland Ohio on March 1, 1930 at St. Vincent’s Church.

Otto worked hard as a stone cutter through the Depression, however, when World War 11 broke out and America became involved in late 1941 he recognized better opportunities for employment working for the war effort. For the first time in his life he took a job working for a company and not working for himself. His job was with Lamson's and Session's working as machine tool operator manufacturing high precision nuts and bolts for aircraft. Because of the high demand for airplane parts, Otto along with 1,000 co-workers were required to produce a minimum of 2,000 pieces per day per man. However, they often surpassed their quota working 12 hours per day which entitled them to double their $.75 hourly wage to $1.50 per hour. Because Otto was a skilled laborer, he was made a "straw boss", which was similar to a superintendent which empowered him with more responsibilities and granted him better job security during layoffs. He began paying income taxes in 1930 but never paid more than $1,000 in any one year. Otto retained his job at Lamson's & Session's, with occasional raises and bonuses. He was a union member however, the only strike in which he ever participated occurred in the 60's and the plant was shut down for 3 months. The strike was unsuccessful and the only thing it really accomplished was loosing the workers 3 months of pay.

By 1947, he and Adeline had paid off the mortgage on their second home, so they sold it and bought a second duplex for $18,000. They rented the upstairs, for $80 per month. Otto retired in 1971 making $3.50 per hour and because of his prior contributions was eligible for social security throughout his retirement. Even though the highest amount of money Otto ever earned in one year was $8,000 he and Adeline invested wisely and were able to live comfortably through their retirement.

In 1973 Otto and Adeline moved to Los Angeles to be near their daughter Dianne and her family. They lived in Los Angeles until moving to Dinuba, Ca to be close with their daughter Mikki and her family. In 1995 both Adeline and Otto moved in with Dianne and Jack in Pasadena. On January 29, 1997 Otto died peacefully with his beloved wife, daughters and grand daughter praying at his bedside. Parents: Otto Mueller and Katherine Norheimer.
