Mathilda Neuman Johnson (photo) was born on 19 Aug 1865 in Frudenburg, Germany. She died on 2 Sep 1959 in La Pryor, Texas. She was 1st Married to George Peter Johnson 1865 birth in Junction City, Kansas. She was ill with cancer. When she was 23 years old she emigrated from Germany with a cousin in 1888. During the crossing of the Atlantic in a sailing ship the ship ran into a severe storm and was damaged, The captain climbed the mast and repaired it. The cousins debarked in the Port of New York. They then proceeded to St. Louis, Missouri to join other relatives that had emigrated earlier. Mathilda and her cousin found work as domestic help with a U.S. Army Captain and his wife Although they spoke little English, they managed to please their employers who were kind enough to help them learn English. During this period Mathilda contracted typhoid fever which in those days before immunizations and anti-biotics was most often 3 fatal disease. Her employers nursed her back to health and she made a complete recovery. While in the employ of the Captain and his wife, Mathilda met and married a young U. S. Army Lieutenant, George Peter Johnson. Lt. Johnson had emigrated from Denmark and entered the Army to learn English. Most of the US. Army Officers and enlisted men that served in the West in the 1800's were immigrants because the service was a hard and lonely existence and recruiting American young men was very difficult. The couple were married by Father Daniel J. Hurley at St. Francis Xavier Church in St. Louis. The newly married couple were transferred to Fort Riley, near Junction City, Kansas shortly after their marriage. Fort Riley was the headquarters for a series of small Forts that were located about a two days march from each other and stretched from San Antonio, Texas to the south into the Oregon Territory. The function of these small Forts was to provide protection from Indian bands to the westward movement of settlers. While performing escort duty to a group of settlers Lt. Johnson was killed during an Indian raid in 1890. Mathilda Johnson again worked to support herself and soon met Rudolph Joseph Kuehn, an immigrant from the town of Prusendorf in Germany. They were married on November 22, 1883 and moved to a farm about 2 miles from Junction City where they resided for twenty seven years. In 1910 the family which had grown with the birth of two boys and four girls moved to a farm of their own in LaPryor, Texas. A third son, Leo died in infancy In her later years after her family left home and her husband died she became blind. She was still able to help herself in her personal needs and even continued to cook. In her late eighties she contracted skin cancer had survived it for many years until she died at age 94 Her daughter, Clara lived with her mother except for a few months when she worked in San Antonio. Clara provided nursing care for her in her later years. She was very religious and recited the rosary every day which provided comfort in her pain and suffering. Her daughter Clara read to her and helped her in reciting her daily devotions. A traveling priest stopped in once a month and gave her communion. She was an expert in handwork, crochet, tatting, quilting, rug hooking, and embroidery. She passed all of these skills on to her daughters. Mathilda died on September 2, 1959 in LaPryor, Texas.
