Notes
Excerpts from "More than Skin Deep" John Blaydes was born at "Spring Grove" Plantation home that his father had built in Spotsylvania Co. Virginia. Me married Mary "Polly" Bibb Key of Albemarle County Va. on the 13th of May, 1796.. They lived and raised their large family on the family estate of "Spring Grove" which he had inheriated from his father. Soon after their marriage he purchased from his sisters and brothers the lots which they had inherited from their father when the estate was divided in 1787. He died just prior to the beginning of the Civil War and his wife died at Spring Grove on May 19, 1867. The division of the estate was typical of large estates after the Civil War...
The death of John and Polly Blaydes were written up in the Religious Herald for October of 1860. and Sept. 26, 1867.... Are as follows..
"Died at Spring Grove, his late residence, in the County of Spotsylvania, on the 11th of July, 1860,John C. Blaydes,Esq. aged 85. Few men have passed through so long a life with more unbelemished character than the Deceased. Possessed by nature of strong and vigorous intellect, he was able to look far ahead and forcast with some degree of accuracy, coming events as they cast their shadows before. The deceased was rigidly and inflexibly honest and correct in his business transactions with his fellow men. and always looked with perfect abhorrence on everything like trickery and duplicity in others. As a husband he was kind and affectionate; as a father, he was indulgent and obliging to his children; as a master, humane to his servants; and as a neighbor, agreeable, social and generous. The example thus say by him is worhty of imitation by all whom knew him. Mr. Blaydes had not make a public profession of religion, but from his manifest resignation to God's will in his protracted afflictions, he has left behind some comfortable assurance that his departuer was calm and peaceful, and prospects beyond the tomb, bright and cheerful. The deceased leaves behind an aged and disconsolate widow, together with a large family of children and grandchildren, and a numerous train of friends and relatives to bemoan his death. But they sorrow not as those who leave no hope, for if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so, those who sleep in Jesus, wil God bring with him. Wherefore, comfort one antoher with these words. In conclusion, the writer of this humble tribute, in behalf of the family of the deceased, tender the neighbors and friends who so kindly and patiently waited on him during his illness their most hearty thanks, for their kind and unwearied attentions.."

"Mrs. Polly B. Blaydes-- Sad is the reflection that the links which connect the past with the present are severing so fast. Every day witnesses the departure, to the better a land, of those who have so long breasted the realities of life.. How true it is "that we are passing away". It is not without sadness that we who are on the frontiers of time, contemplate the discharge of these who, for so long, have bravely occupied the outposts of the present state.
The death of our adge and most esteemed mother in Israel. Mrs. Polly B. Blaydes of Spotsylvainia County, who was a Miss Key, was born in 1781. was married to Mr. John C. Blaydes in 1797; was baptized by Elder Robert G. Coleman in 1831' and died May 19, 1867, in the 86th year of her age.. She raised fourteen children to be grown, eleven to be married and nine to survive her. Her desendants are scattered in Virginia and the West, and are of the highest respectability; and most of them have made and maintained an honorable profession of Religion. For theity(sic)-five years she was a most exemplary member of Waller's Church. Her last end was as peaceful and happy as her life had been quiet, unobtrusive and pure. For many years she had been in feeble health, and lived almost constantly in the apprehension of sudden death. With a chastened spirit but firm and joyful hope in Christ, She calmly awaited till her change should come.
It was the privilege of the writer of this tribute to spend some hours in her company a short time previous to her death. She spoke calmly and comfidently of her hope in the Redeemer; Said she had no fears of the last enemy ...She was " looking forward for the attack at any moment": but "It created no alarm". Such was the life of this dear saint of God, and such her death. In the bosom of her family, with the tender attention of three daughters to soothe and alleviate her suffering, so far as filllial affection could contribute to smoother the rugged steps to the grave, she sweetly fell asleep in Jesus. Venerated be her memory and her virtues, patience, piety and faith be initated by her large circle of sorrowing sons and daughters."
