Notes for A
DDISON R WEBB:
While census reports regualrly recite that Addison R. and Nancy Dillon Webb were born in Kentucky, family tradition holds that both were born in Virginia, he about 1798 and she, at a place called Dillon's Runn, about 1810. The family story relates that he, as a big boy, was apprenticed to a large firm of blacksmiths in New York City and, upon becoming a journeyman, returned to Virginia to be employed on the plantation of Nancy's father. Addison and Nancy fell inlove but her family objected to the match, possibly because of her youth( she was only eighteen when her first child was born). They eloped, apparentley coming immediately to hunstville, Alab where their first child was born, and never had contact with either one's family again. We do not know the names of their parents.
We know little of the Bebb's life in Huntsville. Addison was a Mason. The accompanying picture of him shows what is said to be a Master's Apron. He was never Master of the Aberdine lodge so tit must have been in Huntsville lodgethat he so served. An extant demit was issued Addison by the Huntsville Lodge November5ht, 1842, establishing when the family moved to Aberdeen. Six children were born to the family in Alab. Jerome, Paloma, Obediana Jefferson, Ruth R., Christopher Columbus, and Mary benton. Three more were born in Mississippi, Alabama, Goregia, Robert, W.E., and Nancy.
John E. Rodabough, in his thesis, A Guide to Trades, Crafts and Industry In Antebellum Aberdeen, speak of Addison as" the most prominent of Aberdeen blacksmiths". He also states that Addison served as a selectman in the 1845 and 1859. Thomas brandon built a shop for him just north of the northwest corner of Washington and Chestnut Streets in 1850. A fire on June 17, 1853 destroyed this shop and adjacent building. The news report of the fire comments that "Mr. Webb is of modest circumstances and it is hoped that poeple will be generous in helping him rebuild." Untis that year Addison had paid tac on four slaves but after the fire, only on ohter personal property. HIs loss must have forced sale of the slaves to rebuild.
The Webb heme was on the south half of the bloce at the norrtheast corner of Meridian and Canal Streets. Addison began paying the taxes on this property about 1845. It burned about 1870, shortly before Addison's death in 1873.
Little is known of Namcy Dillon Webb. Her obituary is indeed pitiful.. From the evening Tempest, May 20, 1856, "Mrs Nancy E. Webb. This long suffering lady died in out city yesterday morning. For more than two years she had been suffering form the chastenings of the fell-destroyer, Consumption, and found no telief until welcome death ferformed its work. 'After life's fitful fever, she sleeps well'. The eldest Webb child, Jermoe is reported as being tweinty-one years old in the 1850 census and a s blacksmith. St. John's church records evidense his marriage to Nancy Hopkinson about 1852 and the baptism of their first child. A deed of property in the Strong neighborhood abter the war, excerpts" the one achre occupied by Jerome Webb's blacksmith shop."
Paloma, the second chisk is shown by the same census as being eighteen.. We know Paloma married a Michal Holt March 13, 1851, and at some point moved to Ark... additional information will be added later... She was still living in Aberdeen in the 1890's, possibly with her younger sister, Georgia. Extant letters of that date speed of "Aunt P. " and her brother-in-law, Robert Brannin, uses the full name once. There were 6 children born to Palona Ann Webb and Michael Holt, Only servived. Robert Paine Holt born Jan 10, 1856 Aberdeen Miss. Mar. Maggie E wakefield, Nove 5,1879, and moved to DeWitt Arkansas Co, Arkansas where he died in 1892.
The 1850 census shows Obedian J.( Jefferson) Third child as being fourteen, Ruth R. as 13, Alabama 7, and Robert 2,.
Mary Benton (5th) child married Robert Burwell Brannin. Christopher Columbus Webb married Highley Eugenia Smith ca. 1859-60 and served in the Confederate ArmyCompany C. More's Regiment Mississippi volunteers, which becane the 43rd Regiment Mississippi Volunteers.
Nothing is known of the other children at this time...
About 1870 there is recorded a deed where Robert Brannin buys the west half ot the block at the northeast corner of Hickory and High Streets from John Hilliday. Ti was at this corner that the new house for the Brannin Family was built after the fire. It still stands today(1998) I had a friend take pictures of it several years ago when she made a trip through Aberdeen.
Addison R. Webb died in 1873 and is buried in the old Aberdeen Cemetery Aberdeen, Monroe Co. Miss.
