Joyce Clements' nickname was "The Supply Sergeant."
Once a week for seven years, she pulled up in her 1989 Cadillac and unloaded sheets, blankets, buckets and mops for the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children.
"We lived in a nice house in a nice subdivision, and Joyce felt like she had enjoyed the fruits of a good life and needed to share her time and talents with the less fortunate," said her husband, George Clements of Roswell. "She heard there was a need for a volunteer to run the shelter's supply operation and she was always a well-organized person, so it was a perfect match."
Joyce Papp Clements, 65, of Roswell died of multiple organ failure Saturday at North Fulton Regional Hospital. The body was cremated. The memorial service is 8 p.m. today at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors.
An Indiana native who moved to Roswell in 1974, Mrs. Clements was a registered nurse who worked at hospitals, medical offices and a nursing home before delving into volunteer work.
Soon, she was negotiating with store managers to get discounted cleaning supplies, kitchen utensils, bedding and other essentials to help homeless women set up their own apartments. Friends started using the Clementses' garage as a drop-off station for donations. The day shelter clients came to count on her volunteer shift — every Tuesday like clockwork.
"She was a very compassionate, concerned person who was devoted to making life better for other people, but she had extraordinary organizational skills," said Ruth Schnatmeier, executive director of the day shelter.
"Our clients always knew when she was coming in. Whenever we were ready to help set them up with pots and pans and dishes and towels for their own place, we'd say, 'Wait till Tuesday, Joyce will be here.' "
Survivors include a daughter, Annie Clements of Roswell; three sons, David Clements of Alpharetta, Paul Clements of Woodstock and James Clements of Dallas; two brothers, Kenneth Papp of Louisville, Ky., and James Papp of Buchanan, Mich.; and seven grandchildren.
