| Our earliest Horton ancestor in America was Robert Horton, born to Drayton and Ann Horton of Cow Lane, London, England, on November 27, 1751, Christened at St. Sepulchre on December 26, 1751. According to Court records round at the Sessions of Gaol Deliver for the City of London, held at the Sessions House in the Old Baily, Robert was tried and convicted of petty theft in September, 1769 and was sentenced to be transported for a period of seven years. Robert Horton came to America as an Emigrant in Bondage in 1769 aboard the Justitia. Robert enlisted in the 3rd Virginia Militia, serving under Captain John Thornton out of Culpeper County, Virginia in February 1776. Robert served in the Battles of Kings Bridge, York Island, White Plains, Brandywine and Germantown. Robert was with Washington at Valley Forge, where he was discharged in February 1778. I am proud to be a descendent of Robert Horton. In November 1778, Robert married Jaley Underwood and they lived near the NE slope of the Red Oak Mountain in Culpeper County, VA. Robert died in April 1820, and Jaley is recored as living near daughter Mary in Muskingum County, OH in 1837. Robert and Jaley had two sons and five daughters. Two of the daughters, Nancy and Milly married two sons of neighbor Francis Cheek, James and Elijah. Another daughter, Mary (Polly) married Franklin Anderson. We are still researching daughters Sally and Chloe, but Sally was shown as the head of household in the 1830 VA Census and we think Chloe may have moved on to Ohio with some of her siblings. Son James and his family migrated to Robertson County TN. Some of his descendents went on to St. Genevieve County and Newton County, MO. These Hortons married into the families of Fry, Swan, Snow, Lacy, Pitt, Martin, Groves and McDole. Son Robert, from whom I descend, migrated to Licking County, OH, then on to Grant County, IN, where he died in 1853. Some of Roberts descendents remained in Ohio, while others migrated to Fulton County, IL, Cedar Couty, Missouri and Davis and Montgomery County, IA. Some of the names of the families these Hortons married into include Bennett, Jones, Moreland, Evans, Nelson, Cecile, McLouth and Bauman. I hope you enjoy the pictures I have posted to this page. If you feel you may be connected to our family, please drop me an email . We are always anxious to share out lineage with cousins. Randy Horton |
