View Tree for James Edward Lowery NixonJames Edward Lowery Nixon (b. 1825, d. Aft. 1900)

James Edward Lowery Nixon (son of Absolom Nixon and Ellenor McKnight)246, 247, 248, 249, 250 was born 1825, and died Aft. 1900. He married Emily Alice Dunn on January 16, 1849 in Talladega, Al, daughter of Isaac Dunn and Telitha Monk.

Includes NotesNotes for James Edward Lowery Nixon:
There is a Nixon family in the 1850 census in the area of Randolph Co, Al that eventually becomes Horn's Valley in Clay County, Al that may be the family of James Nixon.

The listing is as follows:

Absolom Nixon 53 Blacksmith b SC
David Nixon 29 farmer b SC
Andrew Nixon 25 Blacksmith b SC
Nancy Nixon 21 b SC
Elizabeth Nixon 19 b SC
William Nixon 17 b SC
John Nixon 15 b SC
Pleasant Nixon 13 b SC
Hariet Nixon 11 b SC
Thomas Nixon 9 b SC

James had married Emily by this time and was living in Talladega, Al and appears in the census there.

Comparing this to information on an Absolom Nixon in Heard County Georgia in 1840 we see the following

Males under 5 - 1
Males between 5 and 10 - 1
Males between 10 and 15 - 2
Males between 15 and 20 - 1
Males between 20 and 30 - 1
Males between 40 and 50 - 1 (presume this is Absolom)
Females under 5 - 1
Females between 5 and 10 - 1
Females between 10 and 15 - 1
Females between 30 and 40 - 1 (presume this is the wife who doesn't appear in the 1850 census)

So if these are the same families then we have to account for:

One male who in 1850 is between 10 and 15
One male who in 1850 is between 15 and 20
Two males who in 1850 are between 20 and 25
One male who in 1850 is between 25 and 30
One male who in 1850 is between 30 and 40
One male who in 1850 is between 50 and 60
One female who in 1850 is between 10 and 15
One female who in 1850 is between 15 and 20
One female who in 1850 is between 20 and 25
One female who in 1850 is between 40 and 50

Realizing that the last child in the 1850 census would not yet have been born in the 1840 census (since he was 9 years old) and since no wife appears in the 1850 census the presumption is that she died prior to this.

Then consider the following:

One male between 10 and 15 is John
One male between 15 and 20 is William
Two males between 20 and 25 are Andrew and ?
One male between 25 and 30 is David
One male between 30 and 40 is ?
One male between 50 and 60 is Absolom, the father
One female between 10 and 15 Is Hariet or Pleasant
One female between 15 and 20 is Elizabeth
One female between 20 and 25 is Nancy

So then there is a male between 20 and 25 and another male between 30 and 40 who are unaccounted for. Also there is an added
female and since Hariet is 11 I wonder if she was actually born AFTER the 1840 census and possibly the mother was pregnant with her during the enumeration.

So then since James Edward would have been approximately 25 during the 1850 census and since we know he and Emily are married and are in the Talladega, Al census already and since there is a male between the ages of 10 and 25 missing when comparing the censuses, I think James is the missing piece.
