William Melton199 was born Abt. 1825, and died date unknown. He married Laura Smith on September 19, 1850 in Henry Co, Al200, daughter of John B Smith and Edith Unknown.
Notes for William Melton: Little is known about William Melton and his family. Mother states that he was from UP NORTH and that when the girls were young he left his wife and went back up north. Mom recalls that he and his brothers rode off on horses and never came back. 1860 census is the only census where Laura Smith is found in Randolph Co, Al. She is head of household then. Nancy and Elizabeth are there but Mattie isn't. In the 1850 census there is a William Melton living with a Smith family in Randolph Co, Al and guess what??? One of Smiths daughter is a Laura Smith age 22. Could this be our Laura Smith and William Melton? If so he was born in Georgia.
Also there is an Alfred Melton living in Randoph county in 1860 (remember Clay had not been formed yet) with wife Nancy and children Joseph, Isaac, Jessie, Benjamin, Margaret, and James M. Alfred is 36 yo and could easily be William's brother.
William may have fought in the Civil War. Linda Ayers lists a William T Melton as a Sergent in Croft's Georgia Battery of Light Artillery that could possibly be him.
