7. JOSEPH9 HOUSLEY (JOHN8 OWSLEY, JOHN7, THOMAS6, THOMAS5, JOHN4, JOHN3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1790 in Tennessee/Virginia/North Carolina, and died 1879 in Union/Campbell County Tennessee. He married PHOEBE LONGMIRE Abt. 1812. She was born Abt. 1797 in North Carolina, and died Abt. 1880 in Campbell County Tennessee.

Notes for J
OSEPH HOUSLEY:
Joseph married a half-Indian Phoebe Longmire. as a result his parents
disowned him, and had his name removed from the family bible. This may
have been as a result of the death of his brother. John. at the hands of
Shawnee Indians in 1811.
Joseph was only a young boy aged eleven or twelve, when John and Charity
settled in Claiborne County. There is no record whatsoever of Joseph in
Claiborne County. Joseph's parents expressed their intentions towards him
and Phoebe, should they marry, and faced with such parental opposition
Joseph moved away to nearby Grainger County.

Joseph is recorded on the 1810 census for Grainger County. But was not
named on the 1810 Grainger County tax list.

He is next known to be in Campbell County at the time that his son.
William. was born on 25 March 1815. He does not appear on the 1818
Campbell County tax list. but is recorded on the tax list for 1823 (as
Joseph Housley). He remained a resident of Campbell County through 1850
and within the next ten years had settled in Union County where he spent
his remaining years.

Joseph and Phoebe moved to Union County between 1850 and 1860 and Joseph
died there. His wife, Phoebe, then moved to live with her son Robert
Housley in Campbell County.

Both Joseph and Phoebe were buried in the cemetery of Cedar Creek Baptist
Church. As a result of the construction of Norris Dam, the grave of
Joseph and Phoebe Owsley were moved by the Tennessee Valley Authority on
24 October 1934 and 18 February 1835. respectively. and reinterred in
Baker's Forge Memorial Cemetery, LaFollette, Campbell County. At the time
of their removal the graves bore no markers.

Information as to their identities was provided by a relative. Joseph
Housley of LaFollette, noted as a cousin. TVA authorities then marked the
new graves with markers containing information furnished by Joseph
Housley.
